I remember hearing about someone who used to keep a couple of old spark plugs in a pocket when riding and used to peg them at the windows if someone tried taking them out.

Now seriously when was the last time anyone kicked a mirror off???? I presume it was the last time a HZ Holden cut you off because that's probably one of the last cars that didn't have folding mirrors

I seem to remember reading somewhere a suggestion made to have a small yellow magnetic sign printed up - something along the lines of

"You have almost hit a motorcyclist today due to your not paying attention to other road users.

Rather than inflict damage to your vehical I have chosen to put this on your car instead.

Be aware - I only carry ONE so if you get your door dented by my boot you have been warned!"

Drop it on their bonnet at the next lights and hope they pull their head in.

Might accomplish a couple of things - you may feel better in that you have dealt with the issue there and then and the driver may be wondering what you put on the car and pull over to read it (more time for you to get away).

I suspect more likely it will result in a world shortage of yellow magnetic stickers, increased global warming and an increase in the GST due to printing costs skyrocketing.

A genuine mistake is acceptable. Sometimes, even I have made the mistake of not seeing a bike whilst tin topping it. Sometimes they can position themselves in the blind spots and they are easily missed. A bike which can be here one second and 20 metres away in a split second, is also sometimes hard to judge. By the time you look and then make the move to change lanes, they can appear in an instant. So I always allow a driver the right of apology, by way of a gesture. However, if it is very blatant and an obviously deliberate act, then they will cop it. I will however, select my times and places to reflect the lowest level of collaterall damage avaialable. It would be foolhardy and almost narcisistic to attempt to take on two tonnes with two hundred Kg's, unless heavily prepared with an exit strategy.

As for funny stories with close calls. A few years ago while on my ZX9 in Sydney, I lane split to the front of a right hand turn lane at a set of lights on Blacktown, only to have the XF Falcon wagon driver at the front of the que, take exception to me doing this and run his car forward from a standstill and bump into the back of my bike!!! I had seen his car move in the mirrors and had a suspicion that he would for some reason, so I was prepared with my feet ready and front brake on. I managed to not drop the bike, thankfully. But it didn't end there! The tin topper, then got out of his car (I gave him the universal salute when he tapped me), and headed for me. Once again I luckily picked up his movement in my mirrors and had enough time to put the bike in gear, turn it off, put down the sidestand and dismount by the time he got near me. He was a pretty big guy, but mostly just fat gutted! He took a big haymaker at me, which I ducked underneath. I retaliated with a left hand uppercut! I must have been lucky and got that sweetspot on the chin, or it may have been the carbon fibre knuckle protectors in my Alpine Star gloves , but he went lights out immediately and slumped onto his bonnet!!! This bought chears and claps from the surrounding tin toppers who had witnessed the whole thing!!! He was a genuine arse this guy! Probably been on the rock n roll all his life and still clinging to his Winnie Reds, Black Sabbath T's and his Trana that he's gunna take off the blocks in his front yard and fix up one day!!!

Glen...Grasshopper....allow me to enlighten you! Modern day mirrors are actually a far more effective target for damage than the mirrors of old.....ala HZ Kingswood as the example you offfered. You, see, you very obviously have very little experience with mirror relocation and thus should refrain from making comments which are baseless! Please allow me to share some information with you which may throw a different light on the subject. Modern mirrors for the most part are spring loaded to return to the original position. A small alteration to it's seated position accompanied by a variation in speed of the intersecting vehicles, allows quite a deal of kinetic energy to be released back into the mirror, thus causing the mirror to shatter into a million pieces. Again, some modern mirrors just have a small slot into which they are seated to retain position, however, once again, the wing or fixtures are usually quite fragile and again, a speed differential of the two intersecting vehicles can cause the actual stalk or mount to fail, thus destalking the mirror. It's all about how it's performed Glen, not the type of mirror being addressed. I hope this assists with any future decisions you may make in traffic Glen .

Also stiking in a downward motion quickly removes the mirror from its pride of place near the front passenger window.
