OK.

The best you can hope for is a $336 fine. With the introduction of new offences and new penalties for driving/riding whilst unlicenced last year (I think?), there has been some complication and as a result a differing of opinions regarding the appropriate offence for this set of circumstances. Some, like myself, agree that it is an on the spot fine. Others believe that the matter needs to be presented before the courts. I wont go into the technicalities of it here, but either way, you won't get off of it.

So, the worst you can expect is to find yourself visiting the local lock-up and having yourself presented to "your honour". You can probably also expect to recieve the blunt end of the officers humour. This often involves the bike being defected for a possible breach involving a non-compliant rear guard, chain guard, indicators or similar. This normally means a reasonably expensive trip the vehicle inspection station.

Having said that, the insurance complications that others have brought up are the biggest risk factor.

Ah-huh. I guess that means that people driving vehicles which are at a stand-still are NEVER involved in a crash? Not sure how that explains a lot of the rear-enders that occur in peak hour? The reason they restrict the bike you ride isn't all about the power or speed it's capable of. It's because of your lack of road craft on a bike. By reducing the amount of performance on offer, it's just one less thing for you to be thinking about whilst you ride around. And in my experience, learners or unlicenced riders on high-performance bikes often ride like total fuck-wits.

It's all well and good for your uncle to insure it, but does his policy cover someone in your age bracket?

As for the comment regarding other people hitting you, and that they'll have to pay. Wait until their insurance company finds out you don't have the appropriate licence. Not only will they try and portion some of the blame onto you, say 10-20%, just because you where on the road, but they'll then start throwing around claims that you caused it because of your lack of licence. I don't own an insurance company, but if I did, I wouldn't want to waste my money defending you on that one.

And let's not even get into the third-part bodily side of things.

I tell you what though, you do what ever you want to. You will anyway.

The cock sure P plater on a 250 with bugger all experience and a whole bunch of self confidence does not end well. Oh, and if you're not insured, please don't ride with me.

I consider myself to be an extremely competent street rider with an above average understanding of the habits of motorists and various road conditions. And as most of you know, I'm also very adept at crashing. :)

When I did my test to get my P's some knob turned up on a 900 to take the test with me. Funny enough the testers wouldn't let him...

Wait the year out... Ive got a 10 and am learning to ride it on trackdays... To say your confident on a litre bike whilst being on your P's is a piss take! I dont think Ill ever feel like Ive mastered the 10 but doesnt mean I wont enjoy it within my own limits. I cancelled my rego and even handed back the number plate just to avoid any temptation to take it on the road!

I've been riding bikes on the road since I was 19 (27 now), and I would still say that I'm not confident riding a litre bike. I honestly don't think I ever will be with the amount of riding I do.

To put yourself at risk is one thing. But when that risk extends to other innocent parties, then I have an issue with it.

I call piss take. C'mon Neka fess up, it's you isn't it...... :D

If you are serious though old son, listen to Aardy and everyone else otherwise you are going to bite it big time, and I don't mean crashing or getting fined, thats the least of your problems. It's the person you take out and put into a wheelchair for the rest of their days. You'll then be well and truly clusterfucked for the rest of your life financially not to mention the other poor bugger who won't get a cracker

I'd say wait, but then I'd have to follow it with "Do as I say, not as I did"

I rode a ZX7R on my P's for about 3 months before a big crash ended it. The car driver was at fault, and I coped the injuries, thankfully the cop turned a blind eye to the licence situation

I'm a shade under 30 (enjoying it while i can) and been riding since i was 23 or so). I have a sport tourer 900 (at 934cc) that i feel totally confident on (though i admit i could handle a lot more effectively). Sure its a few years old and only 50cc under some bikes that have been classed as a litre bike. But i have yet to even TRY a zx10 or gix thou as for some reason i think with the massive changes in grunt from my bike to one of those i'd be shit scared i'd kill myself, or at least get pinged at double the speed limit.

Well i am not 1 to talk, i rode my 6 on my 250 licence for over 9 months, before i got caught, i got a $80 fine and no points, so i am not 1 to criticize, but also from my experience i wish to god no i hadnt got caught, because i had to goto court for driving on a suspended licence from my car several months later and that really bit me on the arse hard, the judge realised i am just a rouge law breaker and basically threw the book at me!

Plus its a bit pointless coming on a forum asking for our permission or advice. The law says this is what you have to do, no matter what we say the law is the law, like my case i didnt get caught for 9 months! So yes its possible to ride without ever getting caught, but then why dont u start selling drugs too ? The pay is good, tax free cash in hand, not much effort ?

Of course we are all going to tell to wait and the fact that u come out with reasons and things to justify what you doing as "ok" is even worse, just except the fact that you need to stay on your 250, GET YOUR SKILLS honed, learn how to ride a bike, not just look good, a 250 is just as capable on the street at any other bike it will do the speed limit and thats all you need!

If you decided to get a bigger bike outside your licence, beware u will wear it IF you get caught!
