The Re-Birth Of Burt

The Re-birth of Burt

Well those of you that know Chris and I well, will know we can’t pass up a bargain and/or a bike that needs some work

A guy Chris works with was talking about selling his 1992 ZXR750-J2 .. Chris came home and told me about it.. Well I just couldn’t get it out of my head and asked Chris could we go around and have a look at it :) So a few phone calls later we are in the guy’s garage. Me trying not to drool lol (what can I say I love Kwakka’s and especially when they are green).. The guy was so nice and because he works with Chris he let us take it home for 3 weeks (without paying), because he was going to Melbourne and wouldn’t be using it anyway.. So we took it to a mechanic and had them do a pre-road worthy on it (didn’t cost us anything).. A few things need fixing, but nothing we can’t fix ourselves

I was jumping for joy.. All we had to do is get it for a bargain Which we did WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

So we are the proud owners of Burt :) (I have to name everything lol ).. So we have had it for a while.. We rode around on it for a while as the guy from Chris’s work said he doesn’t want the plates until we have finished fixing it up :) But we couldn’t wait to strip it down and start getting dirty :) .. We are just starting to get back into it. As I have been a little bit sick in the last few weeks.. But good things come to those who wait

So here are a few pics..

This is what it looked like before we started stripping it :) ooo green :)

Let the strip begin

Chris hard at work :)

Me hard at work as always :)

Image
Back wheel off.. We also have taken the front off.. This is good as we can just take the wheels to the shop to get new tyres.. Just leave them there and come back later.. No waiting

Also we had to replace the rear wheel bearings.. That didn’t take very long at all.

Image
We have to replace the head stem bearings.. We have to take it down to the shop tomorrow to get the bearing off the stem because we can’t get it off ourselves.. This is going to cost us a 6 pack of beer :)

Image
We are re doing the forks because one seems to be weeping.. Although they did not pick this up in the pre roadworthy test.. But we might as well do it while the bike is pulled apart.. and then we know they are done

Image
The chain will be off tomorrow to soak for a while.. The chain and sprockets are in pretty good condition

Image
We picked up some really cheap fairings for it today :) Because some of the fairings are a bit aged and have a few cracks and stuff like that in them.. We thought it would be less hassle to find really good ones rather than try and fix the others up.. We had to re do most of the FZR fairings and it was a pain in the bottom really.. So I am happy with my find :) And hopefully sometime down the track we can get it re painted Kwakka green :)

That’s what Burt looks like tonight

We also need a new clutch lever.. But I am really happy with our purchase :) I love stripping bikes down and doing them back up again .. I don’t know something weird with me lol

So Yeah this is our little project and a new addition to our garage. :D

Yep, thats him in pieces right there, looking all sorry. Not for long... :D

Can't wait till we get it all cleaned up and in tip top condition. I know what we will be doing for a while :P

Thanks to RedRoo for the fairings too, they will clean up a treat

Chris.

Good work guys!!!! I've got two bikes in a million bits in my crowded garage at the moment. Trying not to get the bits mixed up is a task in itself.

If my wife didn't have some kind of phobia to grease and oil we could make a happy couple working on bikes like you two.

Shame you guys don't live in Adelaide.

I have a bike that could use some of the TLC you guys lavish on your bikes.

OK so Chris and I have been busy little bees :) .. We both took 2 weeks off work.. 1 week for me to recover from the operation and the second week to do the bike :)

We took the head stem to the mechanic and he got it off quick smart for us :) So off home we go to grease the head stem up really good... Which we did and that went back on tonight :)

I degreased just about every thing in sight lol and used the autosol on everything I could. It's coming up pretty good imo..

Chris cleaned the chain and sprockets and completed the rear wheel bearings... So the back wheel was right to go back on tonight as well :)

Chris also overhauled the front brakes and cleaned the rear brakes as well :) .. We were hoping to fit a set of braided brake lines but they weren't long enough GRRR.. so we will just have to have the originals for the time being..

We took the rear shock out as well and I cleaned that up as best I could.. I couldn't get some of the gunk off.. But it looks way better than it did ...

Tomorrow we hope to have the bike back together and in a rideable shape :).. We have completed almost everything on the pre road worthy list (except for the new tyres.. they still have some tread on) .... The original fearings will go on it.. until we get the other set painted.. But that really doesnt matter at this stage.. As our main aim is to have the bike road worthy :) Cosmetics can wait a while..

Thanks Lisa
