Well i didnt get the photos yet as im waiting for it to be a rolling chassis again. but in the mean time any suggestions on front brake caliper conversions? From memory the brakes on my zir werent anything to rave about and these look very similar. I do recall gos suggesting a MC swap to a cbr type one but would this make a lot of different to the stopping power, not that ill be breaking any land speed records, but do want to stop when a tin top pulls out from the4 kerb or a roo wants to cross the road.

see if you can find some ER5 calipers from a wreckers. These are a twin-piston caliper but with the 2 pistons on the outside and a single sliding pad on the inside. This means that the calipers will fit without fouling the mag spokes.

A better m/c and some braided lines are the best bet if you can't locate any ER5 calipers. A new-ish m/c from a late-model bike will work heaps better than anything from 1983 !! :lol: Braided lines will also help a lot.

ta for that. ive sourced some lines but was unsure of mc. i keep all eyes peeled for ER5 calipers.

not that specific m/c - what is important is the size of the piston in the m/c. It must be at least equal to your stock m/c - so it should be a 5/8" or 14mm at the very least.

If that CB400 m/c uses a 5/8 piston, it will work fine. It may only be 1/2" though. Will work but lever pressure will feel soft and brakes won't have as much power.

Use this website to check part numbers between models.....

Those 2fiddy calipers look OK, not sure what size the pistons are on those - another way to check compatability between different calipers, is to look at listings for brake pads - often you will find 1 pad that suits a variety of calipers. If the pads for these 250 calipers are the same as the ER5 pads - well you should be able to use the 250 calipers no problem.

just checked that site.... now a bookmark.. and the pads are the same so may have solved my caliper search . now just to find a mc to suit

ive scored a set of clip ons from an R6 so for them to sit above the triple clamp I need to slide the forks up another 10 mm. apart from sharpening up the steering angle can anyone tell me if this will adversely affect the handling?

it will also reduce ground clearance - this may or may not be a problem depending on your riding style.

You will find the steering quite a bit heavier with the forks dropped through the clamps.

thanks gos. my other option would be to place the clip ons under the triple clamp and keep it stock height and angle.
I guess it will be a matter of seeing what and what doesnt work re; rider posi v wrist and shoulder pain v heavy steering and steeper angle. Hopefully it wont be long until its a rolling frame again.

its not too hard to swap them from above to below the top clamp ....I did this some time ago on the Black Pearl while buggerising about with some Magura clip-ons. They felt heaps better below the top clamp than above - but I did have to slide the forks through the clamps a bit more than 10mm to fit the clip-ons above the top clamp........you may find the difference is not so bad ?

i dont know if this will help or not but i am useing a cb900r master cylinder on my 82 gpz 750, it works fine.looks the same as the one in the link above. :kuda:
