OCD
ive reviewed my posts in thunderstruck am feeling a bit guilty about hijacking Slow and wobblies thread about his build. Must have been a blood rush about finding another 550 owner, or that i have had a few alcohol free days this year, so ive decided to start this thread and give Slow and Wobbly's Thunderstruck thread back to him. Thanks for the inspiration Wobbly.

Re: the dunger
so today I have removed the air lines from the front forks. i was going to weld over the hole but concerned about the appearance and effect on the chrome tube. so i tapped the exisitng hole and plugged it with a 3mm staino screw.

i used thread sealer to stop any leaks then dremelled away the burrs where i cut the screw, so that it didnt foul the o ring on the spring cap. it looks clean and i didnt have to worry about any weld splatter. the plugs will be covered over by the clip ons when i get some.

Re: the dunger
well heres an updaqte on the bikes progress.
I knocked up an engine stand and started cleaning up the spare motor. the previous owner had removed the cylinders and allowed all the crap and corruption to fall into the sump. so i ripped off the sump and there is this grey crap stuck in blobs on the bottom of the sump. I showed my learned neighbour who suggested it may have been a molykote type product. it looked like anti seize gone wrong. Ive got some pics to put up when i get a moment.
So this discovery now gives me an inclination to using the original motor and doing a weld repair on the engine casing which i was hoping to avoid by cleaning the spare engine.

Re: the dunger
yes it was real wake up call when i saw the dead centipede/grub thing curled around the sump plug post. I thought of calling bear grills and asking if he'd owned this engine at one time.

Re: the dunger
heres a shot of the sludge living at the bottom of the sump. My other mate said it was sludge from water in the oil and as i cant find it anywhere else in the motor Im inclined to listen to his advice.

Re: the dunger
bit hard to see but water in the oil will go grey like that and after a long period will turn into sludge ,so maybe give it a good clean and if you want to get particular you could get it blasted to bring it back to new

Re: the dunger
30 years of sludging around the bottom and it got very thick in some spots. cleaned it up a bit with some old( a couple of months old) two stroke and its done the trick. no sludge, bugs or grit.

Re: the dunger
you will often get condensation in the old motors which will manifest itself as sludge eventually. Air-cooled motors don't get water in the oil as a general rule.....
I love that MFP photo at the top of this page .....pity its a Honda
- but can you imagine that rig with some lights and a rego label ??
mmmmm tasty biscuit.

Re: the dunger
yeah that bike is the goods. I am really inspired by the whole package but its the colour scheme that first caught my eye. BTW sludge no more in the motor. Is there any way i can change the name of this thread to " Sludge Dread" . Spent today cleaning bits and pieces and removing old gaskets in between other jobs.
