Any auto electricians on deck?
Hi there,
I bought a 150cc quad bike for kids and something is causing it to blow a fuse eveytime I connect the new battery.
I jump started it once and it ran fine. I then changed the battery for an identical and whenever I connect each side to the 20amp fuse, it cooks it.
Not really too sure where to start looking.
All suggestiond welcome.
Cheers.

Follow the wiring and see if any of the insulation is damaged. Sounds like it's shorting out somewhere.....

At the risk of being Captain Obvious, you did connect the new battery correctly ?
I've spent over 40 years of my life riding bikes .... the rest of it, I wasted ..
If it's got wheels or tits, it's gonna give you trouble !

Certainly did. Double checked that, just in case...6maniac wrote:At the risk of being Captain Obvious, you did connect the new battery correctly ?

+1 with smithy, sounds like a bad short, but just out of curosity try putting the old battery back in,unlikely but it could be a faulty battery

I also tried this. Put a new fuse in and tried to jump start it again off the car. Same result. A cooked fuse.h.b.bear wrote:+1 with smithy, sounds like a bad short, but just out of curosity try putting the old battery back in,unlikely but it could be a faulty battery
Having looked at the interweb for some ideas on problems solving etc, a possible faulty solenoid seems to come up frequently.....may be a quick fix.....
How can I test whether the solenoid is working correctly?

Geebers don't jump start from the car battery, you might cook the lot

We had one of those quads and it was constantly flattening the battery - ours had an alarm on it that was the problem..
The wiring is pretty lousy so I'd check and see if any has melted and is shorting...

Re: Any auto electricians on deck?
I think this is a resistor and shouldn't be leaking a sticky brown smelly fluid.
This maybe the issue.
Come to think of it, I'm pretty sure nothing should be leaking a sticky brown smelly fluid...
Thoughts....on the suspected issue?

Re: Any auto electricians on deck?
Correction, its a voltage regulator. Those in the know, would this cause a short and the fuses to blow?
