I have a fair Idea that Phil and Wattie KNOW why they are quick!

What he's saying is true though. Nothing to do with Wattie or Phil or this situation, but understanding why and being very good at something has little to do with how well you can communicate and instruct someone else to become very good at it, especially a rank beginner.

I've taught approx 11,000 one-on-one half hour music lessons. I'll never be a great musician in the true sense of the word, but I can say from the feedback from students, parents and colleagues I'm a GREAT teacher. I've worked with a few GREAT musicians and in my experience they have only captured the imagination and created devotion in students they can inspire who are very focussed and gifted. I'm not saying it's impossible to be both, but doing it doesn't necessarily mean you can teach it.

Another example is that by all accounts Ron Haslam is a superb motorbike rider, but his instructions to people taking his class on his instructional DVD are confusing and misleading. I learned more from plenty of people around here in 5 mins of chatting or reading posts than his pointless overpriced double dvd set. The same can be said for a couple of other motorbike dvds I've watched.

I think a lot of the skill of effective teaching is being observant an insightful into the level and state of mind of the student, and giving the right instructions/experience at the right time. Freaking out a person who isn't a naturally adrenalin-driven rider or is a control freak isn't going to teach them anything, in the same way as going to a Led Zeppelin concert won't help you a play like Jimi Page, and for most people will reinforce the "I could never play like that" mindset :)

Yep don't disagree with that, but from the conversations I have had with those two, they not only are fast, but can talk about how they do it. But my point is more that you actually can learn a hell of a lot being a pillion with a capable rider. Someone in here did one of those Bayliss pillion laps. From memory, that was something they commented on.

I certainly learnt a hell of a lot sitting on the back of Sam's FZR1000 up the Licola rd that's for sure. We started last and finished behind the leader, who can steer a bit good too!!

 Just to give you an idea, when you do a track day at eastern creek there's 4 groups; slow, medium-slow, medium-fast, and fast.

I've never ridden with you but I'd imagine if you were to do a track day now (with no injuries) you might get around one lap in about 2:30 or so.

The approx slowest lap time recommended for the fast group is around 1:50.

I think Watties quickest lap is in the 1:36s

They are the general rules...
It's like the primary colours. Use a
Combination of these to get you out Of any hairy situation.

Notice I dont preach "bail the fuck out!!!!"
Besides stacking it at T1, ever seen me run off the track? Make the corner at all costs :)

Pretty much as going onto the wrong side of the road, I cannot remember the last time I did that without meaning to, ie overtaking or being able to see through a corner ot two ahead.

Heaps of people faster then me in here, but I dont like making mistakes and always ride within my limits. IMO its all about being smooth, especially when your riding with 3 ZX10's and a CBR1000 all riddien by former or current racers - and your on a twin shock bike with a spine frame ;) Fark that was fun :kuda:

I reckon you should jump on the back with Leanne, you learn a thing or two about being fast and smooth there too ;) But seeing she doesnt have pillion pegs I'm guessing thats not gonna happen in a hurry.

In all honesty, following a rider who knows what they are doing is worth heaps, I learnt to ride by following Tim when I could - and trying to follow Evro (Blade Boy) - still cant keep Tim in sight on a dirt road but

well i am up for it if Phil/ Wattie want to do it
im sure i could do better then 2:30 at least id like to think that i get very competitive even if its just a 2fiddy just out of curiosity the time of 2:30 is for the slowest group i take it?
if Leanne ever gets those pegs and is willing to go for it then i ll jump on with a degree of hesitation
that being getting outclassed by guys = i can deal with it, getting outclassed by a chick = game over & possible outcome might never ride again
