I got into running because I have a desk job, and all I did was watch my waistline grow day by day... And then in a drunken moment I agreed to do the 14k fun run as a bet. And then I got addicted

I also hear that swimming is one of if not the best non-impact ways of exercising around, except I'm a such a shit swimmer that I never get to try it. Every time I jump in the water I almost drown, ad after only a couple of half drowning laps I'm dead tired.

On the other hand, I also cycle and I find it's great for building up muscles around the hip/knee/ankle joints. If I start getting joint pains from running I tend to feel better after a couple of cycling trips around the hills. You don't realise how damaging running actually is until you do some solid weeks of training

I also find cycling makes me breathe much deeper than when I run, which is a huge positive for an ex smoker like me.

Huge distance.
How do you balance your BGL when running such long distances? Do you have an insulin pump?

Craig I've been on insulin injection for years now. It's the day or two after where it drops .. so i just back off on the run day.

I'm a type 1 as well. I'd be scared shitless of having a really bad hypo if I ran anywhere near that distance. I'm interested to know how much and what you eat/drink during the run. cheers

I carry 2 litres sports drink cordial in camelback, and a packet of jelly beans just in case. Have just moved onto also carrying powershot thingies..

When i said i held off on insulin on day of run I meant i reduce insulin intake to ensure it doesn't drop too low.

In saying that// running has actually allowed me to stabilise on not needing half as much insulin as i used to. (actually I am on a third of previous)

:D I have only just started doing some interval sprints at the local school. on a rubber surface as i get very bad shin splints with normal running.(broke my leg badly when i was 23).
I generally ride the pushy about 150kms a week but i find that i don't lose any weight doing it,hence the interval running to be able to keep up with the group when riding up hills. at 100kg not the fastest going up but i am the fastest going down the hills
Ride safe and stay upright - Cheers Scott

Keep up the good work. It's good to hear. I've just started on the straight and narrow. Have lost 3 kilo's and already noticed my insulin becoming more efficient.
All the best.

..

I ran half marathon distance for the first time on Sunday.. (road running on country roads out in the bush)
Surprisingly not as sore as I would have thought. Monday all muscles were tight ... But by Tuesday night felt good again!

so now i'm looking forward to doing it again! I think I may just be going crazy

Ran the half marathon at the Run Melbourne event today. It's the longest distance I've ever done, with the previous longest being a stop/start 18k around the Yarra river and the Tan area.

I think I got a sub 1.45 time, but I'm hoping that I'll be closer to 1.40 - not bad for a third event hey? :D
