So, moral here is unless revalved use what the manual says, the new oil should be changed every 2 years, which reminds me, it's about time to get mine done [/quote]
Just checked when my suspension was upgraded (Racetech-2yrs ago) will be getting the oil changed now, thanks for the tip Phil.
Eric.
All good sofar - everything is apart. Cause of oil seal failure - crud under the dust cap, must have worked its way down.
Anyway, waiting on Racetech springs.
In the meantime, thinking about reassembling. There are 2 copper/brass bushes each side which the Kawi manual says must be replaced. Is this strictly necessary?
Thanks,
Bill.

Too many toys.......work is getting in the way!!!!
I've just drained one of the forks - the oil stinks - never been changed (106,000km).
Any particular brand of fork oil better than another (no, not an oil thread)?
BTW, I'm only 57, I don't race, but like a quick twisty road (not that there's too many in WA). Now and then the bike makes it East for the MotoGP, and the riding in Victoria.
Without revalving just use the std weight oil and of a quality brand. The rate it is changed would have more impact than the particular brand of quality oil you use.
As an example my std forks were re valved and ran 2.5-5wt oil, when it was incorrectly changed (seals etc getting done) and std 10wt was put in it wobbled at hig speed ($1.80+) with new 2.5-5 it was ok again. So, moral here is unless revalved use what the manual says, the new oil should be changed every 2 years, which reminds me, it's about time to get mine done

I'm taking your advise Phil, it's 2 yrs since I had the racetech springs and the valves done so I'm getting the forks serviced.
(new oil and seals.) To save some dough I took the legs out and will send them off to my mechanic. I figure it's no use having the suspension upgraded ansd not keepng it serviced. Thanks for the tip.

Good stuff, you've got the right idea too, taking the forks out. It takes bugger all on the rex as well - gotta love nakedness.
Wish the Zed was as easy - its just as bad as a faired bike to get the legs off
Let us know how you get on, who does it and how much they charge.
No worries Phil I dropped them in today at (Phillip Island Motorcyle Repairs) run by Ben a top mechanic,I'll let you know how much when I pick em up.
Eric.
A Footnote blokes, Ben pulled one of my forklegs apart to show me what to look for. The oil was buggered, dark grey and smelly next to useless and that was after 2 years and 11000K's.The 2 bushes were good and I'm getting new seals.

That would be my old mate Ben Bateman. Tell him Marty says hi! And you're right, he is a good bloke.

Bill those bushes are teflon coated on one side, one on the inside and one on the outside only replace if the teflon is showing sigs of wearing through( IE. little spots of brass showing through the teflon.)
I left the bushes as they were. New oil (10Wt, motul), new seals, dust covers, crush washers at the bottom, and of course the Racetech srpings (1.0). What a difference in ride! The springs are longer than OEM, so had to cut new spacers, which I made 5mm longer than really required. Preload is on 6 rings showing, and at my 100kg seems just right. Rock steady. Now waiting for the Gazis to replace the rear springs.
You're right about the oil - it was rank. Had never been changed in all of the 102,000km.
Also put in a Dynojet kit, which does very well. Slight flat spot at around 3000rpm, will need to put a washer under the needles.
Next: the ZZR1200 fork oil.

Bill i also have the racetech springs and I got a revalve, if your interested the bloke at the suspension joint did the settings on my bike and I am very happy with them, they are-----Compression damping--2turns out.
Rebound damping--1and a quarter turns out.
Preload--7 rings showing.
I'm 85 Kilo's. I'd like to know what you think of the new Gazis shocks when you get them.
