well, it depends whether you are saying just let people off every time or assess each instance, given the later I would say 3 & 7.

7 for the reasons laidback1952 wrote. 3, well, I know you're in HWP so let me give an example, on most of the motorways around sydney, if you're doing 110 you will have a truck, bus or car sitting about 1m from your rear bumper so frankly I'd rather do 120 with all the rest of the traffic and get a bit of space obviously if the rest of the traffic were doing 110 or less and I was doing 120, can't really argue about getting a ticket then.

as for 4 & 5 if your talking about having the phone glued to their ear rather than hands free, i wouldn't complain if you just shot them by the side of the road, same goes for texting.

As for speeding in school zones, I commute through 2 on the way to work on the bike, if I happen to be passing through between 8 & 9:30 I always slow to 40, however I know some day I will become a hood ornament on shitheads 4WD or merc as at least 50% of the time you will have one of these about 10cm from the rear wheel, frequently leaning on the horn and/or shouting abuse out the window.

Cheers
Matt

3 ) Being over the speed limit by 10km/h in a 110km/h zone; YES
I'd be interested to hear (or read) peoples opinions.
# 3 is not even close to being fair due to, inaccurate Speedos, inaccurate or un calibrated instruments used to detect the speed... the list goes on
but is just my uneducated opinion ;)

Everything else on your list is fair game..... especially Drink Drive  I have no tolerance for drink driving it should result in a Jail term minimum.

I would imagine you could fine people for all of the above. I guess every situation is different. 7 is the only one that i would really expect for a copper to use some discression. That said, i was fined for something. Not displaying a P plate correctly. Both plates were on the car, one was missing a bout 1/3 as i had an altercation with a roo. Reason given to me by the HWP copper. "Its your first and hopefully last fine you will ever get". Since then, my oppinion of cops changed ever so slightly. One cunt of a cop dont make them all that way. ;)

1 ) Failing to indicate; Depends on the situation. No cars on the road, no one to indicate for.
2 ) Being over the speed limit by 10km/h in a school zone; Fine away
3 ) Being over the speed limit by 10km/h in a 110km/h zone; Depends on the situation, other traffic doing the same thing? :?
4 ) Talking on the phone for 25minutes whilst driving; FINE AND SMASH THE PHONE
5 ) Talking on the phone for 30 seconds whilst driving; AS Above
6 ) Not wearing a seatbelt; Fine and find other things to fine them for
7 ) Displaying an expired registration label; Discression i guess, but if they have a record of non compliance, give em a ticket ;)
8 ) Drink driving at .051. Fine away. :x

Problem with that arguement Rob is they are always innacurate the other way. i.e. if you are actually going 10kmh over the limit, your speedo was likely reading 20kmh over! And as far as the instruments used by the cops goes, they are calibrated more often than you would believe!

The exception being modified wheels, in which case you still should know your speed after the modifications. That's your responsibility!

hardly comparing apples for apples here

I would consider a police office achieving the correct result e.g. Nelso going straight home and registering his trailer. As a job complete and the officer as efficient.

You on the other hand would see the lost revenue that could have been collected in this case, therefore an UNprofitable officer. Bad officer ;)

I find it funny how the 'pro profitable' law enforcement arguments all presented so far have cannot fathom a desired (where Nelso resolves his oversight) result without the penalty dollars being paid. Strange that!!!!
Whilst i disagree with Nelso, he argues his point with valid ideas and concerns he has, you say you have friends that are cops and carry on with this garbage/\ No amount of smileys makes that sound funny.....

Just because I have friends that are cops doesnt mean I cant hold my own opinion that condradicts their opnion.

My attempt to show that I am in no way getting bent up and serious in this thread has obviously gone above your head :? .

Judging by your reaction in all of your responses it seems that anyone that holds a different opinion than yours must be a complete moron and unequivically wrong on their PERSONAL stance.

Dont forget that there is many ways to skin a cat and I for one believe that it is possible to correct police in the community without inflicting financial penalties at the drop of a hat to achieve desired result ;) ;)

I'm going to respond then walk away, personal attacks from behind a keyboard ain't my style. I don't say anyones opinion is wrong, but am I not allowed to disagree and have mine? You weren't sharing an opinion, you are basically saying police have some vested interest in the cash side of fines, which is preposterous, anyhow enjoy......

My wife was booked for that very reason
She had overtaken a Police car that was parked at the side of the road. She then turned right at a roundabout without indicating.Police car then sets off and pulls her over. Officer Said "I am booking you for failing to indicate",she said there was no other vehicle about, who am I informing I am making a turn? Police officer says "it doesn't matter, you have to indicate at every junction you turn".At the said roundabout you can clearly see all directions so In my opinion that was just revenue raising,no discretion at all shown.

On a slightly different note.Near to where I live, most of the back roads were 100K speed limits,In the past couple of years all of them have had the speed limit reduced to 80K.I rang the local council and asked why they had taken such measures and was told that Vic roads and Vic Police between them had made the decision. He said they wanted all the back roads in the Shire 80 and only main roads 100.Saying they thought it easier for the public if it was a blanket 80KPH on back roads in the Shire. So obviously these roads were then heavily patrolled for errant speeders and an easy revenue fix.

So what has happened now is they are now going to reduce the speedlimit to 60kph in some areas so as to prevent accidents on the shire roads. So much for uniform speed limits  Obviously these sections will then be heavily policed for the interests of safety
The way its going,it won't be long before we have to have someone run in front of the car/bike waving a red flag warning of impending death.
