One thing I'd add is that the power 'from the starter relay bolt' in the circuit diagram should come from the one directly connected to the battery- not the other one!
2 X ZRX1200R 4 X ER6N, GT550, 1988 ZX-10, 4 X GPZ250R, 4 X GPZ900R and GPZ750R :) Yeah I like Kawasakis.

Yes - good point Bones.....otherwise it could get ugly !!

looking forward to the photos Paul - if the header pipes are in good nick, its definitely worth hanging onto them....if the holes on the back are on the 'inside' of the mufflers (generally they are, but not always) - then you may be able to just braze some 'patches' over the holes, and spray them with silver paint ? I have seen a few old Zeds like this, unless you look pretty hard at the inside of the mufflers, this repair is good enough for a daily runner - not really up to scratch if you intend bunging the bike into any show'n'shines though..... ;)

This is definitely not going to be a show bike.
Well, maybe...certainly, not for now. Just want to get the thing up and running, but gee, it looked bloody good when i had everything on. Regardless of the condition, it's such a great shape.

Okay, the bike is going to arrive shortly.
So, might as well start here.

Anyone know where I can get a Z1000 seat?
Or have one made...I have the base, though rusted. Maybe it can be used.
Also, does anyone have one for sale?

The bike, at present, is not going to be taken back to mint condition. It will, over time, but at present I am aiming to get it back on the road first. I want to ride the thing, then work on the cosmetics.

I have a mate in Victoria who probably can help you with a seat for this bike - only problem, he has just gone on a big ride over to WA, and won't be back for a month or so..... :? if you can hang on till then, I'll send you his details when he gets back.....

Thanks for that.
I'm hoping to get the thing on the road for summer. What a blast.

PS.
I mentioned it to one motorcyclists (old enough to know better) who went all misty-eyed and RAVED about the power and handling.
The power I can understand, but the HANDLING????
Then again, he also convinced himself it was water-cooled...

Bike arrived the other day and now safely stored in shed.
Will get some photos.
First thing is to start the engine, so job number one is to reintsall the rat's nest of wiring, get the petrol cap off (lost the key), get a battery...and fire the thing up.
Looking forward to riding this thing this summer.

just about any old Kawasaki key, or similiar motorcycle key..........or even a fine flat-blade screwdriver will open the lock on the fuel cap......they are not the most secure design..... ;)

Started on the wiring so I can get the motor running...I'll spare you the pain of a photo, but think 'rat's nest' and then think 'but, I knew how all this worked twenty four years ago!'

There has been a little damage (cut wires, etc), but the good news is a local bike mechanic is also an electrician, and is happy to do what has to be done. Mechanical stuff I'm fine with, but electrics...

Well, a year has passed and I finally have time to start work on the Z1000.
That wasn't expected...
Anyway, off to the bike shop next week to get the wiring fixed.
Been looking for seats...I can buy a new one (non-original) for $350, but I've seen a few seats for other Kawasaki models on ebay. Does anyone know if another model fits?
Cheers
