LOST MY KEEEEEEEEEYYYSS! ALL OF THEM

Post by PaulF »

Hey guys,
i lost all my keys and the keycode  !!!
Did some research and it looks like it's a costly mistake. I have to pay about 250 $ for a set of 2 keys!
I managed to open the fuel cap and it had a code on it but Kawasaki dealer in Lane cove said that they need the key code from the ignition barrel which is a hassel to remove. Also looks like the VIN is worthless for this matter since you can't get the keycode from the VIN!!!
Any ideas guys before i call a locksmith  ??

Not remove just the barrell Paul, but remove the entire top triple clamp!! It's the one that houses both the ignition barrell and the fork tubes! Remove tank, undo the headstem and triple clamp pinch bolts, Remove handlebars (depending on if they are clip ons or not) unplug the electrics and voila, slide top triple clamp off. It's a 20 minute job for someone who knows and a good hour if you don't. :)

All the barrels are "keyed alike" so a good locksmith will replicate your keys from any one of the barrels........either seat lock or petrol filler cap should do ;)

is that the case on the kwaka ?

eg old hondas the petrol cap uses a few pins and the seat lock uses the other few pins of the key so a locksmith can make the ignition key from the other 2 combined

Hey guys :)
I managed to remove the side fairings and read the code on the seat lock barrel
it's in the following format:
232-1d42

Is this the keycode or is it a part number ?
Cheers

I took my ignition key which fitted all three locks, along with the number I got from the seat lock, and the locksmith told me that if he cut a key from that number it wouldn't match the ignition key I'd given him.

Hey Daisy,
My key was a combination key too so i'm guessing the key from the seat lock wouldn't work
Any ideas where on the ignition barrel the key code is written, like if only remove the black plastic piece around the barrel, would i be able to see
the key code.
Thanks for you help!

Sorry, I can't help with the ignition. I've only removed the other two - and there is no number on the fuel cap barrel BTW.

Done some more research and it looks like the Keycode number has the following format:
Z#### and also many forums keep on saying that you can get the keycode from the helmet lock but the bike didn't come with one
Hopefully tomorrow a locksmith will be able to make a key without the code , i dont want to remove the ignition, this will be my last resort!!

The ignition isn't all that hard to remove. Just fiddly and time consuming. They should be fixed with two shear head bolts. These can usually be removed with a centre punch, a hammer and lots of patience. The biggest problem is the stuff you have to remove to get to the base of the ignition.

Personally, I pull stuff like this apart because I'm too tight to pay someone. ;)
