G'day all from the ACT

Post by Billz »

Greetings to the KSRC,

My name is Bill and I bought a 636 D a little while back.

I've been lurking for a while, keeping an interested eye on the Hardcore Canberra Crew, as I'm yet another inhabitant of our (currently frosty) national capital. It certainly makes a bloke carefully evaluate just how badly he wants to go for a ride when the temperature is down into single figures (or less)! Been idly wondering if at least part of the reason the HCC is 'hardcore' is because said core is frozen solid?

I've been messing about with bikes since I was a little kid in the 70's and developed a fondness for Kawasaki's after I bought a GPz 900R back in the mid-80's. My most recent bike (before the ZX-6) was a '97 ZX-7R, which I scratched through the twisties around Sydney (where I was living at the time) on most weekends until about three years ago, when it came time to sell it when I went overseas for an extended period.

I thought long and hard about which bike to buy this time around, but I'd had a long-standing liking for the ZX-636, which a few test rides on different bikes did nothing to dispel. The only other serious contender was a ZX-10, but I reckon the full capabilities of a -10 are mostly well beyond what this average mortal would usually ever use on public roads. So are the capabilities of the -6, of course, but at least I can have a decent go at feeling for where the limits are at, and I've saved a few dollars into the bargain!

The pic is a bit crappy, I've spent more time riding it than looking at it if you know what I mean, but you get the idea. I'll be keeping an eye out for any rides that come up locally, although right now I'm planning a run up to Queensland - Brisbane and maybe beyond - in the next couple of weeks. If that doesn't get me and the -6 thoroughly acquainted, nothing will! Can probably call me iron-butt by the time I get back, though! :butthead: <Now, where'd I put that sheepskin?>

Cheers, Bill

Thanks for the welcome, appreciate it.

Hoffy - yeah, I get given a hard time about it not being green and about the flames, but f**k 'em, I like it too. It has green DNA, it doesn't have to BE green to be a Kawasaki, eh? It's not like they're all the same shade of green anyway!

Neka - not usually frightened by several hundred plus km rides. Haven't tried it on this bike yet, but I reckon it'll do big km days okay. I'll know for sure after I've ridden it to Qld and back, but yeah, absolutely, pencil me in. Just don't expect me to sleep on the ground in a tent at the end of the day - I'm getting too old for that shit!

Mel - I'm keen for a ride most days, so as long as I'm in town, I'll be along fairly regular, like.

ttc - thanks, still planning when and where I'm going, but if I don't end up going much past BrisVegas I'll be around there for a week or more, so I might be in touch. I've got some friends around there that have extensive plans for me when I visit, though!

Well, there's a reasonably valid theory that if the piss up is of good enough quality, the tent becomes entirely optional, the bare ground becomes soft and perfectly comfortable, and the blanket of frost that settles over you in the early morn is, against all expectations, toasty warm.

I've tested it on a number of occasions and it seems to work - unfortunately, the hangover that results from reaching this level of self-sufficiency now takes me about a week to entirely recover from, so it's just easier to get a room somewhere, get comfortably pissed while exchanging stories with my fellow drinkers about our collective unspeakable motorcycling talents, and give the shakes, double vision and frostbite a miss....
