Scottoilers...

Depends on what you set it at scotty. Goes from 1 through to 9 with 1 being the least delivery. I have mine set about 3 and it oils the chain with very very little fling. The higher you set it then the more fling off the chain you will get. No where near the fling of standard spray lube though and the beauty is that with the chain being hot and the centrifugal forces of rotation help the oil to penetrate alot more then using chain lube from a can.

I have a scott oiler .. was on the bike when I bought it ... worth its weight in gold. Will fit one to all my bikes from now on.

I have a theory that a dirty chain is a happy chain :idea:

The theory being that they are internally lubricated with the 'dirt' acting as a barrier against environmental agitatents (eg gamma radiation which is especially pertinent in Australia).

Er, so don't neglect it. I do my chain once a week.

I have a bit of a theory about the chain maintenance and its the price of lube against the price of a new chain

Me too, by the time you count the labour aspect, the cost of kero and the cost of the actual lube, it's actually cheaper to do a 'quick and nasty' lube with WD40 and leave it that.

However, I'm big on home maintenance and would sooner spend $10-$15 here and there and never have to replace the chain in the time that I own the bike. The chain also looks nicer and the biker is cleaner, so it gives an impression that you like your bike rather than flog it.

The other thing to consider is that a change of chain and sprockets means the bikeis off the road and you have to organise transport to/from or else a loan bike. Easier just to clean it...

BTW, WD40 is about the worse thing you could possibly use on a sealed-chain...might as well be spraying it with acid.

Sorry to bump an old thread, but I'm thinking about putting a scottoiler on the zed.
I just can't get it on the stand by myself, I tried the pushing it method and just made a mess (madkaw can attest to my chain lubing ablilty

)

Stereo did you do end up with it??

Id get one but am concerned about oil on the edges of the tyre.
Fine if I was just touring, but worried about its suitability for hooning.

Does any oil get on the tyre, or can it screw up and dump oil everywhere?

No oil gets on the tire unless you have it set up very very very wrong

I scottoiler is a set up with a little oil bottle that lubes the chain for you basically while you are riding.
