Z400 timing advancer removal

Hi,
I have had a small go at getting this off and it is not budging. Is the timing advance bolt left hand thread. The bolt is marked with an ‘L’ but the simple manual that I have does not state direction and I can’t find anything on the net about it. Thanks in advance. Deano.

Re: 77 Z400. Intake Boot Screws.

If you can get a grinder in there, then you can also try and grind a 'slot' into the heads of the screws. Then you may get greater grip by way of a normal screw driver rather than a phillips head. I used that trick on my race car.

Thanks Bart. That’s an option as well.

Re: 77 Z400. Intake Boot Screws.

You should find that once the boot is off the stud is no longer under any tension/friction and will turn right out. Often when drilling a head off, before it actually comes off, when the 'meat' of the head is that thin the head deforms upwards, unloading it and then grabbing the head with pliers ...

Re: 77 Z400. Intake Boot Screws.

Bummer.

Can you drill, grind or file the head off? The stud will then come out easily, and you can replace with SS capscrews...

Thanks Brett,
I’m thinking you may be onto something there. I reckon I could easily get the 4” inch grinder in there. Once the boots are off I could spend some time ...

Re: 77 Z400. Intake Boot Screws.

When you say "impact screwdriver" do you mean one of these or air/electric?

I have found these to be excellent with Phillips heads, and the "use a bigger hammer" mantra works with them!

Yep that’s what I’ve got Brett but I can’t get ...

Hi all, just wondering if anyone could give me some advice on getting these screws out without stripping them. I have put some CRC on them and have had a go at them with the impact screwdriver but can’t seem to budge ...

Re: 1977 Z400 D4

Yeah - there MIGHT be some weird "CARB" stuff for emissions in Califoniaye, but though this bike might even predate all that guff. Until you know different assume it's the same...

Yep Brett the carbs seem to be the main difference. At least on mega-zip I can see that the parts are the same ...

Thanks Kwakked up. I have finally been able to find a parts supplier and it appears that you are correct.

1977 Z400 D4

Just a quick question. I have been looking at service manuals and have purchased a Kawasaki one on EBay matching my bike being a 77 400 D. The only thing is it just about all the manuals say KZ (American) instead of just Z. I now realise that I also need a parts manual. If it states KZ instead of Z ...

Re: Newbie

Hi Mate. Welcome to the forum. That is a big question! The good thing about the internet is you're spoilt for choice. First thing is make sure you have the parts manual and the Kawasaki service manual for your bike (not the Haynes or clymer crap ones). Best place to source these is eBay if you can ...

Re: Newbie

Welcome! I suspect the answer might be "wherever you can get them" - but I don't know. There will be plenty of guys on here with heaps of knowledge and experience with those older bikes.

Post pics!

Have you got a workshop manual?

Newbie

Hi everyone, new to this forum. I have just purchased a 77 Z400 and I am keen to get some quality advice from the people in the know.
I’m from north Victoria. I’ll start with my first question, where is the best place to purchase parts online?
