Adjusting rear preload on zzr250

Post by mikk »

hey all

i'm trying to adjust my zzr's preload at the back.

i put the bike up on the centrestand and because i'm lazy i proceeded to bang away at the adjuster collar on the shock with a screwdriver and hammer. thing is, it won't raelly turn. even if i give it a great big almightly bash it only moves maybe half a setting then the spring pushes it back to where it was.

either:
a. i'm too weak (HIGHLY possible)
b. my technique is wrong (nah cmon all the bush mechanics do it this way don't they?)
c. i should really be taking the whole thign out and using a c spanner or something

help :!:

1) spray wd40 in there as it stiffens up without adjustment
2) get a c-spanner, if not for your sake, but for the sanity of the bikes next owner
3) have the bike on the centrestand and make sure it's got the rear off the ground.

hmmmm? Don't know about the little one but the 11 shock has to be removed for the adjustment. Also has a "locknut" does yours have a locknut?

chamo, yeah i know about the 11 needing it removed for adjustment, great bit of design that!

on a lot of older bikes & lower end suspension there isnt a "locknut", it just uses spring tension and a slight indenation in the "levels" on each spring preload to hold the tension at a certain strength. I've not yet seen a spring change its tension setting just by bouncing around.
