Running costs.

Post by Strika »

I just quickly did some calcs.

On average with front and rear tyre changes, I get 7200klms out of a set. (A little more for the front, and a little less for the rear). they cost me 400, but lets use a fairly universal tyre price as a reference for the sake of this exercise.

7200 klms = 1 set of tyres = @$480. Fuel used for this same distance based on a n average of 6 l / 100klms at an average price of $1.36 =@$580.

Then take rego and insurance into it. $450 and $550. Plus average maintainance for that distance of $170. Giving a grand total of $1170 for this bit.

Lets say a rider does 15K per year, then cost of ownership is going to be a total of 2X$480+2X$580=$2120 + $1170 =$3290 for the year.

Which gives you an average per K of 22c/klm.

So every ride I do of say 500klms really costs me $110.

This of course doesn't take into account depreciation. Let's say we depreciated the bike at a nominal figure of say 18% per year. So end of year one, our 15k bike is now worth $12,300 and has lost $2700. Now if we add that to running costs.......... we get about.........

$0.40c / Klm

So really every 500 k ride I do costs me $200.00

I may have to give up riding at this rate

Should we factor in speeding tickets and court costs?

Hmmm thats one way of looking at it...

I ride mine to work every day.... so...

I pay $20 of petrol every week....
if I was driving a car, that would be at least $50
So I have earned $30

I dont pay for City link. Up until last month I was going through the burnley tunnel at least twice a day, at a rough cost of $4 a pop, this works out to $40 a week. Plus add to that any other trips I make and we can safely round this up to $50 a week.

I dont pay for parking at work (other staff do). This is $4 a day, and thefore works out to $20 a week.

The total then becomes $100 a week LESS than what a car would cost me.

This works out to a total saving of $450 a month (if insurance is roughly the same).

My bike repayments are actually considerably less than the savings are, and therefore I am actually EARNING money from riding a bike.

At the end of the repayment period I will have an asset left over.
The world is round. It has no point.

Well here's my calculation:

Buy road, not racing tyre = $480 for 12k
Maintenance = free (DIY), except oil which is $17 for 6000k
Fuel cost $1.3 per liter, zx6r will easily do 17km/ltr.
Insurance 3rd party = $88/yr
Depreciation cost = 0 (a 5 yrs old bike :D )
License cost = 0 (I do have full 12 pts you know...)

Which calculates to $0.485170588 / km  and 500km ride would cost me $62. That -- with the performance of a Ferrari Enzo so I cannot complain :D

considering I can claim ~66c/km for tax...40 odd cents is pretty good.

I notice Strika hasn't depreciated any riding gear with that, like a helmet...

Too true for you Stereo. :D But I wasn't so much worried about comparing it with a car. More just working out what it actually costs me to run a bike for a year. It's almost 6k a year for me to run one. Maybe a little more if you include an upgrade fee  I still reckon it's cheap relative to the enjoyment it gives though.

I mean really what price can you put on a motorcycles usage and enjoyment value???????????

No idea, so I don't even try...I try not to think of how much it costs me...it might spoil the enjoyment a bit if I knew...

Ahh well if yr looking at used bikes .........

Depreciation......I am pretty sure that your 199? model XYg r567 will actually not stay stable or increase in it's value over a short (say 10 years) time period............

2nd hand bikes are not under warranty....you may be lucky...you may not......

Used bikes still require servicing, and often have to have worn bits repaired/replaced..........

They still require the same registration costs also..........

What about all the bits you have added to the bike, GPS, Patented Javaman NOS bottle holder, etc etc.,..........

And as someone mentioned Andi, Don't forget the cost of your gear..............even the brotherhood of St Lawrence charge for stuff!!!!

well, in the 12 months i've had a bike:
1. i bought a zxr250 and gear for $6,000
2. Insured it for $400 (3rd party)
3. Stacked it and spent $1500 fixing it.
4. Sold it for $5000
5. Spent $1500 getting it prepped for sale.
6. Bought a zx9 for $6000
7. Just spent $400 on sprockets, chain and chain breaker
8. Bought a new helmet and jacket for $700
9. Stacked bill's scooter - $300 for parts, further $1500 for cosmetics and $5000 for the car i hit.

Not including running costs,
6000 + 400 + 1500 + 1500 + 6000 + 400 + 700 + 300 + 1500 + 5000 - 5000 = 18,300 in one year.

But fark it's worth it

Actually, they are running costs...you don't need a helmet to drive a car but you do need one to ride a bike...and you should replace it every 2-5 years...or if you have a stack...unless you're Neka and it doesn't matter if you brain your damage
