Advice please.

Post by DEN MONKEY »

Ok I know Im going to take some flak over this one, since its a kwaka site but I would still value your opinions since you were all so helpful on the "making the step to a 600" post.

Looks like the gpx is going to be sold this week and I was over at Newcastle motorcycle wholesalers during the week having a look see.
Told them what I was chasing and they said they had a 94 yzf 600 coming in this week for only 700 more than Im getting for the gpx.

Obviously I havent seen it yet but will be going over on wednesday to check it out. Alot will depend on the condition and milage of the bike, but I'd be interested in hearing if anyone has had any experience with them.

Also Im still unsure if to hold out 2-3 months and scratch together the money for a later model 600 or just spend bugger all and grab some experience on a 600 for a while.
Im planning on doing a few long runs with some mates, so this might be a good transition between the gpx and a sports 600.

Just not sure if I am going to hate myself for taking it and not waiting for something I've had my eye on for a while.

Just not looking forward to being without a bike for longer than I have to.

Just remember be gentle and if I take this road than it will only be to get more experience so I dont damage a nice zx when I finally get it.

That depends on how much you're getting for the GPX.

That model of YZF600 didn't sell at all well (undeservedly, really) when new; they're essentially a YZF750R with lower-spec swingarm and forks, so find parts if you bin it won't be that much of a bother, but model specific parts will be rare.

Their biggest problem is that they date from the time when Yamaha's build quilty was at it's iffiest. You're looking at oil consumption from ovaled bores, grumpy clutches from notched baskets... possibly. If it's had new rings and new valve stem seals at some point, it should be fine.

It'll be a good buy, provided you get it for mid-90's 600 money. I wouldn't pay more than four grand for a schmick one. If it's scratched up or weathered, three grand.

Mate, I know it's hard to do but don't jump at the first bike you see unless it's the exact one you want, it's in showroom condition and you intend keeping it a long time.
Buying a bike is a lot easier than selling one at this time of year
So haggle like mad and be prepared to walk away if dealers dont want to haggle........summat will turn up, and like I said with the onset of winter deals can be had
I don't suffer from insanity; I enjoy every minute of it.

I have had three different friends who had long term ownership of one of these jiggers. I also owned and raced one back in 1994. They are a solid reliable roadie, which steers lightly and is pretty stable. Engine performance was brilliant for 1994, and it handled very well. It was fairly comfy for a then sports bike from memory, and you can do 800klms in a day without needing chiropractic care!

Despite what some people may think, they sold reasonably strongly early on, and were regularly raced, so therefore access to bits is OK. Although they are now getting a little long in the tooth. HTH :)

Only real issue I ever had was front fork bushes wearing out. No biggie really, $180 fix, and never reoccured! :)

Thanks as always guys.

I've been trying to look the up on the net but am finding it hard to find much at all. So was a bit concerened about parts etc.

theyve got 4500 on it but like i said Im yet to see it. The weekend sales guy said that I wouldnt be paying the 45 anyway. Certainly sounds like I should be able to get it cheaper. One of the other guys there rode it to the workshop for a check up when it came in and said it was tip top. What ever that means. Not likely he would say anything else.

Guess that will come.

Cheers again
