Ok. So in short you have a bike and its giving you some internal mechanical grief which isn't noticeable on appearance and cant always be picked up on when ridden.

Rather than spend big $$$ on a repair bill, would you try to palm it off to a dealership on the sly without letting them know of the mechanical issues? :wink:

Nope but been the victim of it. Bought a GPZ250R from a Brisbane Yamaha dealer near the City....
It shit the engine 21 days after I bought it, and of course no warranty- cost me $1200ish to get going again. (this was 1994) The camchain was stretched, so rather than fitting a new one, they dropped a blob of weld on the end of the camchain tensioner to take up the extra slack. Headgasket went and full topend rebuild later she was on the road again. Took nearly two months for local Kawasaki dealer to fix. Wrote it off a month later which was the best thing for it.

I did it to a dealer when i was 19 traded a 1000 suzuki in on a honda 750/4 chopper and took the extra cash

Yeah I would do it to a dealer. Their job is to check it over and over :twisted:

To a dealer yeah but not privately. I've been told at dealers i didn't hear what you said about it having no compression & a rooted gear box. They normally send them interstate/outta town or whatever from what i understand.
Tanya will have a better idea on what policies they use.

but at the end of the day a fellow biker will normally get screwed.

Oh, and you all wonder why dealers give you lower than book price on trade in.

Their not going to fuck around investigating bike history and mechanics, take the bike for minimal amount, get it on the forecourt and fuck it off.

Forget the morals, dealers are there to make profit, full stop!

If you really do chop a fucked bike in at the dealers, knowing that, then remember some unsuspecting guy or girl might buy that bike at top $$$ and end up with repair bills or worse DEATH.Especially new people to the hobby looking for a 250, enough to put someone off straight away, buying a lemon.

My '9 had the dodgyest?? rear tyre known to man ,to the naked eye when purchased was fine, could have killed me at high speed, but is that my fault for not puttin a new set of hoops on straight away, the dealers fault for not removing both tyres at trade in and inspecting, or the guy that traded it knowing full well there were 4 plugs a ripped tread block superglued down and a tube in the rear tyre of a bike that can do 270 ks.

It's up to you but I would not sell anybike to anyone that I didn't know was 100% roadworthy, it's honesty versus being a lying piece of shit,, plus your playing with peoples lives.

I've been on the receiving end of a shitty bike sale too (the old gpx250) and despite the things I wanted to do to the dealer I wouldn't hand over a dodgy bike to anyone without full disclosure - don't want anyone buying to have to deal with that.
Most dealers check absolutely nothing.
Some will do a full check and service - eg I know Gosford Motorcycles fully service each 2nd bike before putting it out the front for sale - most won't though.

I must admit I considered this when the old 9 started playing up, but at the end of the day I couldn't do it...so I had the wonderful experience of fixing it myself and then, after making sure it was all good, traded it in on the 10

I don't condone lying. So if asked if there was any problems I would tell the truth. However, If they did not ride it, and did not ask, then I would say Bike shop Buyer beware!!! That is to say, if a shop buys/trades a bike in and doesn't take reasonable care in assessing it's condition, then they deserve all they get.

My reasoning is, that if they attempt to resell this bike, and have not taken due care to ensure the bike is safe, and functioning, they could injure or kill someone. It should be a mandatory procedure with the evaluation of any trade in or purchase by a bike shop, regardless of age and kilomometres.

If you buy a used bike from a dealer and trade a bike in, and they do not assess it thoroughly, imagine then how they selected the bike you may be considering to buy? Oh but the previous owner said........ :lol:

i can see all ur points..and agree with most of em....i too would like to screw the dealer, but i also wouldnt want to injure/kill/ cost $$ to the new owner...
heres an option..
after u sell the bike, leave a note in the handbook/under the rear seat compartment saying "this bikes fuked"..now i kno ppl dont look at these places when buying a bike, so send an annonymous letter to the dealer telling them what is wrong with the bike..maybe a day after u take ownership of new bike...

mind u, it would b piss funny if the "new" bike u bought was in worse condition than the one u traded...

I went to a dealer with my trusty 250 as a trade on the 6r and he left the headlights on for 10 minutes and went to start it and told me the battery was no good amoungst other things :roll:

and if i had have known about morgan park at the time i would have kept it.

I wonder if i sell my current bike to a newb with the volume of them i see in insurance auctions if i am doing the right thing even though i know the bike has been well maintained they arent the easiest things to ride and will bite pretty quick.
