How Mrs Felix's gear held up...

Post by Felix »

Dejavu...

I wrote this in response to some queries from people at another site wanting to know how well girls gear stacks (pardon the pun) up in a crash.

I can't say it enough - we could and should have avoided all Mrs Felix's worst injuries. It was slackness on our part.

I thought I'd post a few pics of the gear Mrs Felix was wearing with a brief description of what the damage is, and how it actually helped (or not).

Image

Boots (above!) copped a bit of a scrape as can be seen in the photo. These aren't expensive boots - we paid $190 for these Gaernes, and I bought them for her birthday about 4 weeks ago. They did a pretty decent job of protecting from severe gravel rash and supporting the joint, otherwise we are pretty sure there would be torn ligaments and stuff. It was a pretty bad twist, but at least it is just a bit of bruising. They've paid for themselves easily.

Image

The jacket above is the Joe Rocket Cleo. Apart from some dirty, oily marks, no real discernable damage, except a slight bit of scuffing on the sleeve. The fact that Mrs Felix has no bruising on her arms/elbows is probably due to the armour in the sleeves having done its job.

Image

The gloves are Dri Rider womens gloves, and if I didn't tell you they'd been in an accident, I am not sure you could tell.

Image

Jeans above did sweet fa. They were a $10 pair from Target. Not suprisingly, it is her left knee that carried most of the damage, and you can see the blood in the photo. Apparently Joe Rocket have some knee pads that you can wear under jeans, in the States they cost $23.99. Haven't heard boo from Mladin Imports on whether they are available here, but if they were I'd buy 2 sets today.

Image

Helmet was an inexpensive MDS (about $120). It took a bit of a hit on the lefthand side and saved much scratching of Mrs Felix's face. Neither of us would ever, ever, EVER consider anything but a full face after this. Although it probably doesn't look much, the impact probably would have been enough to knock her out, or break bits (or worse) had she not been wearing it.

Now it must be said this wasn't a high speed accident. She was probably only doing 50-55kph to start with, and it would have been much less by the time she actually fell. But by the amount of injury she got to her unprotected knees, it could easily have been a lot worse had she not had all the other gear on. If she had a pair of Draggins on, she'd probably only have bruising to the knees.

Essentially her worst injuries were unnecessary. We could have avoided them with a pair of proper jeans, or something as simple (and cheap!) as knee pads.

The next bit of "safety gear" after jeans/knee pads/new helmet is going to be a braking and cornering course.

Well yeah good to see the jacket held up because that's what I wear 98% of my riding time. :D As for helmet I think in the end the cost isn't so much an issue as they all need to pass the Australian Standards anyway so it should do what it's made for.
Glad to hear she is OK though :D

The worse part is we have AU standards for helmets, and nothing else.
Anyone can make or import any leather goods and market it as motorcycle gear.
Doesn't mean it would stand up better then the $10 jeans.

Bring on an AU standard for leather gear. :)

Yeah mate, I believe it might be quite a different crash from mine.
I went down on the left(low-sided) and was using my elbow(coz I knew the armour was there) and my backpack to slow myself down, the bike went sliding about 10m on tarmac.
And I was doing a little bit faster than that...

Now I have to go n read the other post to find out the details on how Mrs Felix actually went down

I know that nothing beats leathers, but it's getting really wet and cold here in Melbourne and I'm wearing Textile jacket now.

Why do you think the textile jacket did not protect your elbows? Were the armours misaligned during the slide ?

IMO my jacket did its job, the rash on my elbow was due to the abrasion from the inside of the jacket(fabric burn), not the road. Being a textile mesh jacket, I did not expect it to hold up against sliding on tarmac, I believe only leather(or kevlar) can do that job.
Good guess, the armour was misaligned during the slide, but it took the initial impact from the fall, which explains why I did not have any bruises.

And it's wet and hot up here in Brisbane.

I agree 100%

I heard only this morning that UK are doing this. Perhaps we should as well. :D

When I had my off 6 months into riding, I was wearing a leather jacket, gloves, Docs and normal jeans. I slid out on some gravel in a corner doing about 25km/hr. All my gear held up well, a small bit out of the chin area of the helmet, scrapes on the gloves and Docs, and a couple of scrapes on the leather jacket, the only damage was damage to me , a huge chunk out of my knee. Beats me how I managed to open my knee up and not rip the jeans, but the jeans were brand new and I would have been pissed if I had damaged them!
Cheers,
Anne

Looks like the gear did its job except the jeans, I think she got out of it rather lightly thankfully, albeit with a bit of shock 8)

Good report Mate & hope Mrs Felix is all healed up.

I've started making myself wear Leather Pants, I Can't wear my Kadoya one-piece on weekend rides as i look like an absolute tossa (more then usual anyway) so I got a brand new pair of leather pants from ebay for $150 delivered from a mob from Phillip Island.
At that sorta price they HAVE to be a real option for anyone riding a scoot.
