ZX7-R Gearbox 2nd gear clunk when hot...

Post by Johnik »

Hey peeps,

Noticed today when I took off from home and did my first 1st to 2nd shift it went seemlessly. Then I noticed getting from 1st to 2nd when shes hot was a pain in the ass. There was all kinds of clunking and bs going on when the temps got up there out of the norms.

I am currently running Shell Advance VSX-4 15-50. I was wondering if maybe I got a lower viscosity oil it might help a bit. I'm thinking at the moment that the problem is that the oil is thininng out when the bike heats up and isn't providing enough lube for the box and its making 1st to 2nd shifts more difficult.

Has anyone had a problem like this and fixed it by swapping oil's to something thicker? What range and or brand do you guys suggest? The bikes done around 30'000 km and I serviced it probably about 500 km ago. Be interested in what other 7 owners are running in their bikes too, just to get a bit of an idea....

Thanks everyone!! :) (sorry bout the length of the post)

I doubt a lower or higher viscosity oil would cause the noises and gearbox operation you have described. It sounds more like a bent selector not seating the gear properly, or a worn dog not allowing easy synchronisation of the gears. Best get it looked at. :(

Dam, I was worried it be something along those lines :x

I had the box checked out and they where saying the tight chain was causing the dramas :? It's only really noticeable when it's hot tho, if was more along the lines of what ur saying wouldnt it be doing it when its cold aswell ???

Not neccesarrily. Sometimes it's when cold, sometimes when hot, depending on whats broken or worn. My racer had a prob of jumping out of gear when hot. Didn't do it in the first few laps, only in the 3/4th laps when really hot. Was just a worn dog, no biggie.

But without actually experiencing what you're talking about i am only guessing. Best get it looked at. :)
