Geez it must've been a quiet news day.
Be nice if drivers on mobile phones or with stero's so loud they can't hear anything else, or cars/trucks that are maintained like shit, or roads that are a disgrace got as much attention. Now we have someone who knows not a lot about motorcycling telling us that leather is the only safe option. People from Dririder would be happy with that.
Sheesh

Reminds me of the first time I took Michelle on the back of the GPX, it was a 33-35'c Saturday with very still and hot air. We had a lot of riding planned later that day, so were absolutely dressed to the hilt in riding gear.GPX.Lainie wrote:Yeah I am with you Mina but also how many riders do we see all dressed to ride and the pillion in shorts and t-shirt? I have seen so many guys on bikes in riding gear and I think would be their girlfriend dressed as if going to a club.
Saw a friend go by with his missus on the back, both in t-shirts and shorts and only wearing gloves. Michelle turned to me and pouted slightly and asked "see they aren't wearing this stuff, why do i have to wear it?" I didn't even have to think for more than a second for my response, "because i f*ing love you".
I'm not knocking doing the squid thing, hell i've done it a bit myself here and there when going to the shops or testing some change on the bike. But i could never live with myself if someone i loved was hurt/killed because of something i did or did not do (i.e. not insisting they wear the full kit on the back of *MY* bike).
Seen on the way to PI on Sunday morning...
Calorie enhanced male on an R1 with FF helmet (of course),dianese leather jacket, race style gloves, SHORTS and RUNNERS....on the highway at Grantville.
Wait it gets better.....
Driving (dont ask) along behind him and what looked like 2 mates (sportsbikes) at 100, suddenly shorts guy speeds up and then throws a BIG STOPPIE at 120/130ish
Good looking stunt to be honest but in SHORTS and runners.
Luney tunes.

well I fully admit to squidding at the Island, for the short stint between the caravan park and the track. It was stinking hot. So there you go. Would never squid on the highway, thats a different kettle of fish altogether....
If some young cop under 35 told me I was a fool for riding without protective gear, thats fine, but jesus mate, I have been riding longer than you have been breathing, so who's experienced, and who's not ?? Its no excuse, but it really is my choice to squid when circumstances warrant.
If you choose not to squid, thats great.
cheers

If they want people to suit up the least they can do is to make some standards that the clothing (especially the cordura stuff) has to follow as some of the construction of jackets, etc are just stupid, for example one of my jackets use scotchlight stips as a structural part of the jacket and completly tore apart in my low speed off

Krusty, there are European standards for the CE armour, ie you need to make it to a certain standard to be sold in Europe, that doesn't apply in Australia yet but something ppl are working on last I heard.
For waht it's worth the cost of achieving that standard and the entitlement to sell in Europe doesn't come cheap at all so few manufacturers are actually at the standard.
Tiger Angel, Dainese and a couple of others are about it last I heard.

A good mate will bail you out of jail, a true mate will be sitting in the cell next to you saying "Damn, we fucked up!!!"

Thats because that is the uniform that is provided to them and they have to wear their uniform.ninja9 wrote:Funny that the majority of coppers and paramedics I see on bikes are all wearing short sleave shirts and jodhpurs
I know some paramedic bikers and some of them wear their own back protectors/gloves but they are not provided with correct protective equipment. None of them will complain though cause its more fun riding the bikes than driving.
Plus for added safety they have bright flashing lights and really loud sirens
