Last night I'm doing a little work on the oil cooler of the ZZR and I decide to drain the oil, and since I'm gonna change it when I get a filter, I decide to fill it back up with the stuff I got on hand just to flush it out once. I poured in Valvoline SG Formula 20W-50 API SG/CD. At the bike shop today I grab some plugs and filters and discuss oil and the young dude puts the "FEAR" into me by saying that any oil I use must be rated for Bikes else the clutches will be rooted!!! Anyone ever used an oil like the one I described and have a drama??? I only ran the bike for a minute with it in there.

I put Motul always but have been thinking to put in cheaper oil as well. The manual says so long as it's rated SF or above is fine... so same question for me...
How is it running anyway. Notice anything dodgey ?

It's still on the centre stand as It has a leak from one of the oil-cooler banjos. I got scared into buying 4L of Yamalube at the bike shop and I just want to drain the valvoline and start over wit a new filter. If their is any "poison" in the Valv perhaps I can dilute it out. I might let someone ese be the guinni pig on this one.
non bike-oils have friction modifiers in them which is bad news for wet clutches. but if you only ran it for a minute then fillled again with proper bike oil you probably wont notice the difference. did you squeeze the clutch at all with the bad oil in?>
