You don't have terribly much in the way of suspension adjustment on the ZZR-250, but you can adjust the pre-load. I am somewhat heavier than most

so I found the only way to make the ZZR have any semblance to acceptable handling was to wind the pre-load up to the maximum available - this also had the added benefit of lifting the rear, making it less likely to scrape the centre stand (though it still did often enough)
To adjust your pre-load you need to screw up the stepped collar which surrounds the shock and locates the bottom of the spring. Although you should be able to do this on the bike (preferably using a c spanner rather than a hammer and a screwdriver), the location is an absolute bitch to get to, so I ended up pulling the spring and shock out, compressing the spring with a g-clamp and turning the pre-load collar up.
Like others have said, I found the centre stand really useful when servicing so left it in place and got used to the occasional bounce and slide when it dug into the road.
