$10 Carburetor Synchronisation

Some guy had an idea to use pipe and oil to synchronise his twin, so I thought why can't that be used for 4-stroke.

So I bought 4mm hose, garden tap (not needed actually), and a broom handle to make it a bit nice. Put some oil in it.

The theory is for different suction, oil will move -- while when balanced oil will stay put.

So first I balanced carb 1 & 2 (first screw, shown on pic)
Then carb 3 and 4 (3rd screw)
And finally carb 2 & 3 (2nd screw).

And all good and smooth!! Thanks for that I saved $150 bucks (and consequently $200 every 4 months)

I have a set of vacuum guages and feeler guages

if anyone wants some help with their carb sync and valve clearances, I respond
especially well to bribes involving home cooking and/or alcohol

(I'm also organising a spanner day in a few weeks from now if anyone is interested)

do the vacuum guages work well or are the mecury ones better :?:

well, "vacuum guages" really refers to the general category of devices that
measure vacuum, so mercury falls into that

the one I've got is a "carbtune II" and uses light metal rods - its more then
accurate enough to do carb sync

(I've also got a free method of doing carb sync .. got within +- 2mgHg using it)

ok.

cos when i was looking around i'd seen actual guages that look like a speedo/tacho. I though thats what u meant.

the carbtune is good. I've investigated it but too pricey.

ahh yes, those things

well you're welcome to use the carbtune if you want (I prefer not to lend tools
out, but I can bring it over for u)

The guage ones are expensive because they have to be calibrated. No point using them if they all read differently to the same amount of vacuum. Friend of mine has a mercury balancer. Instead of using U shaped tubes it pulls mercury from a common tank. Works the same as the guages, you can do all 4 carbs at the same time and you have nothing to calibrate. Saves having to swap hoses like you do with the U shaped glass ones. Don't think you can get them anymore because of the mercury.
