Im looking for advice, im going to change the pipes and cans
on my 95 zzr-600 and want to know..

Which is better 4-1 or 4-2 and why?

Hey Rob, for a four stroke four cylinder engine, 4 into 1 makes the most power and the most usable torque. Dukes, SP-1s, and trail bikes aren't four cylinders so the rules are slightly different.
In four cylinder engines, only one cylinder is firing at a time (flat planes excluded), As the exhaust charge passes through the collector (where the pipes join into one) it pulls or tugs on the other three pipes and helps them draw their gasses through. Each of these in turn helps the others breath as they pass the collector.
Bikes like ZZR1100's ZZR600's and Busa's run a four into one and then split back into a twin system. This gives good power and still maitains good looks and balance of the bike.
Early sports bikes like CB750's, Z650-900&1000
all ran true 4-2. The first real mod people made was to change them straight to 4-1.
Ron may have some input as his ZZR1100 is running a single system and my brother has a modified twin system on his ZZR1100. From what I've seen of these two missiles, their performance is very similar.
4-1 tend to sound sweeter I think, and not many people can actualy make use of more power (apart from straight line drags), but not many people will openly admit this.
So choose what ever turns you on.
Ofcourse before anybody rebutts this, there are some exceptions to these ideas.
It is far better to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even if chequered with failure, than to take rank with those who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, as they live in grey twilight that knows no victory nor defeat.

I agree with everything...coz he's right
(another petrolhead...like me..... :lol: )
3 comments....
the split of systems..back into 2 outlets..is usually for cosmetic
purposes...think the current Z1000..it 'balances' the bike....

and secondly...
a 4 into 1 also gives the torque a boost..by having a reasonably long
'collector'- the pipe bit where the 4 pipes come together
The longer a collector is...the better (within reason)
but space on a bike is limited ..remember
which is why the single large outlet....the pipe from the
collector to the can...acts as an extension of the collector .
A long collector also helps speed up exhaust gas flow...
the gas pulses feed on each other
and a long collector also takes the bark out of the noise
so you can have a more open (less restrictive) can.....

finally
with a 4-1 you can also easily fit a 'cat' in... which is happening more and more with bikes ......

btw

I have a 4-1 on the Gpx....
it honks...make more hp than stock....
and sounds...nice 8)

Thanks guys, it looks like ill prolly go for 4 into 1 into 2....

Im not even going to open the can of worms about which pipe/can combo to use.

On my GPX it was a chrome plated soft steel set my mechanic sourced,
cost me about $750 plus install.. And on that bike it made a huge difference to how she sounded and moved through the revs..

Well after discussion with my mechanic this morning while he was replaceing my week old BT020 that was killed by a screw through the outer edge..

The system on my gpx600r was a formula 1, which looked and sounded good, and did improve the bikes performance quite a bit.

He had a similar system on his zzr600 and suggested the 4-1 even though it will loose some bottom end torque over the 4-2.. (hey less weight cant hurt either).. And to quote it will transform the bike...

Total cost of the system will be similar to the previous one.. $750.00 plus fitting

after the original system rotted, I put a Megacycle 4-1 on the Gpx.
The can lasted but the headers didn't last that long...only about 6 years
the can is still fine...cept its scratched...
so i got a 4-1 Formula1 full system to replace the Megacycle one...
and like you, I have found it to be a good system for the value...
and when I fitted it, I got Brighton Kwaka to tune the bike
they played with the carbs and other bits...and it still flies... 8)

btw
Brighton Kwaka also got me the F1 system....was cheap, around $600
at the time (cupla years ago)

Looks like formula 1 has made the decision for me...

The only option I have for my ZZR is a 4-2-1..

Will this still be as good as a 4-1 directly.

Rob...generally yes....
for as long as the '2' joins pretty much straight away to '1'
not much room under there, so I suspect it will....

F1 may have gone 4-2 to get around the frame on the ZZR
and then 2-1 underneath...
the system I had on my ol' Gpz750 did that
coz the frame was close to the motor...
wouldn't worry...
