ZXR750L3 fuel pump clicking noise

Post by slocs »

Team, looking for some wisdom regarding my '95 ZXR750L3.

This morning I've changed out the fuel pump, pump relay, filter, and rebuilt the fuel tap/petcock.

After putting some fuel back in it, and a couple of cranks it's fired up beautifully. However, there is a pronounced clicking from the points under the pump cap that alternate in frequency depending on revs. I can recall any noise from the old pump.

Given I purchased a non OEM pump, is this noise a problem, or is it par for the course with cheaper replacements?

Any advice offered is greatly appreciated!

Thanks, Rob

I have the same clicking sound but don't have any fuel starvation issues and the pump flow and pressure check out fine on mine.

I thought I'd make a couple of vids:

This one is when the fuel tap is set to main. You can hear the pump clicking furiously.

On this one tap is set to res, and the pump is ticking over occasionally.

I'm guessing I might have a blockage in the main tank hose?

Thanks

I say ride it and let it develop.
It might just be new bits needing a run in.
Those points sound nice and healthy to me..
Just sayin.

Electronic fuel pumps should click that is the pump noise - it will pump faster when the fuel pressure drops to keep the fuel up to the motor, maybe check your fuel tap rebuild if you think there's an issue. But if it's running without any issues it's working - you'll know pretty quickly if you've got fuel starvation. I have a dozen or more bikes with electronic fuel pumps and they all sound different so wouldn't really worry unless there are other signs it's not working properly.

Hey Mate,

Basically the after market fuel pumps are ALOT noisier than the Kawasaki OEM pumps that came with your bike.
They work fine and you will get used to the clicking so as long as your bike is running fine then i wouldn't stress about it. The price difference from aftermarket to genuine is about $200 so i can put up with the click for that. I have replaced several for people on the P models and same thing as you have.

I've also heard that the aftermarket pumps are noisier than the OEM pumps.

Check that you haven't kinked the 'main' fuel hose when putting the tank back on. Have you ever changed the fuel hoses between the tank and tap? Just asking as if you have and didn't use the OEM formed hoses it will be difficult to stop them kinking with standard hose
