There was a good thread some time ago regarding the benefits or otherwise of using Premium unleaded over 'normal' unleaded in newer bikes ( read 95+ octane bikes).

After trolling through some old issues of Rapid bikes, the Dec/Jan 2005 ( ie issue #3) has an interesting article penned by the resident guru, Phil Irving. Phil has just been to a BP gig at Lang Lang proving grounds, to test the latest release of BP Ultimate. He is not providing a paid ad for BP, rather just pointing out where fuel development is headed. My personal experience of this fuel is that it is definitely the pick of the bunch of all "premium' brands. The point he is discussing is the reduction in the use of benzene as an octane booster

Here is what he had to say: " BP maintain that the octane rating of 98 is achieved by careful attention in the refining process and not by additives.....other refiners still have to meet this challenge......". The killer for me was ".......by comparison, another market leading premium has a benzene content of 3.3%, and an anecdotal reputation for difficult cold starting and plug fouling....."

This premium of course is Craptimax. Use it at your peril. It is shite. Every biker I know locally avoids it like the plague. Want all your oil 'washed' off the cylinder walls ?? Use Craptimax. The detergent additives are extremely effective. It has an 'anecdotal' reputation for a very good reason. :x :x

Don't ever consider running 'normal' unleaded in a +95 octane bike. Detonation is a killer :cry: .

kerrrrrist Dave ........did they dig his bones up or what??

in memory of the great man, I know CAMS have
an engineering award named after him and I know in his memory
..there is an 'Irving Vincent' bike coz he designed the Vincent Black Shadow.
He also designed Brabhams FI engine and famous of course for the book.... Tuning for Speed
so who is this at Lang Lang? his son?

re the fuel....
I remember the thread here
general consensus was Vortex or Ultimate
was superior to Opticrap
even the BP PULP was better than the Shell product

It is of course Ian Irving.....no relation to the *best* of my knowledge.....

Vortex has the advantage over BP being 4c cheaper with your docket.

This seems to be a favourite word for Adeladians - many years ago - 1995 - I was on a AFL forum at the ATO, and fair dinkum, every time we sunk the slipper into the good 'ole boys from Rundle Mall, the only thing they could ever come back with was " TOOL TOOL TOOL you absolute TOOL "... it always was a mystery to me, can you shed any light ?

4c cheaper is good for big fills ( say 140 litres in a 4WD....ouch), but a normal fill of say 15 litres will only save you 60c. This is why throwing in a slightly cheaper ( but much lesser octane) fuel is really false economy. ( At least in +95octane bikes)

My local Caltex station has just started selling the Vortex98 (silver pump) - it seems pretty good, feels much like the BP Gold. They also sell 'normal' Vortex 95, as well as plain jane unleaded.

mate.. i think tool comes from being the male reproductive tool..cos it means "dick"...
another nice way of calling sum1 a dick, is to call them a "spanner" ( a tool)...or if i really think lowly..ill call em a "shifter" (a tool which in theory should b very useful, but often fuks up cos its non specific & rounds off ya bolts)....

yes of course it means dick, I am just wondering why it is so popular in SA - you hardly ever hear anyone from Qld call anybody a 'tool' , and it means dick up there as well :wink: just seems really popular down your way :?

Now a spanner - We used to go to a pub in Belconnen, ( Capt'n Greggs) its nickname was "Spanners' - 'coz every time you walked in there, your nuts would tighten !!! :lol: :lol: :lol: it was also known as Capt'n BaldyForks..... :shock: and some others not fit for general consumption...

Dave, if you want some real high octane get some Elf. Unless you're running astronomical compression it won't much for performance but it makes your exhaust smell good.

As for the tools in SA I thinks its because they have nothing much else to do down there than play with their tools......

Holy flash back Daveman, Capt'n Greggs! We always called it Capt'n Kiddies 'cause everyone was underage...but then I was only 15 so I would have had a different perspective

yes, Capt'N Kiddies was another good nickname, for exactly the reason you have said - mate I remember the dills from the Liquor Board who always prowled the place on a Fri/Sat night, the same 2 geeks, same suits, they were very conspicuous :lol:

You may or may not remember a group of unruly bikers who lived in the corner next to the DJ's box - that was our crew. There was always a stack of bikes out the front, and we would throw our gear on the 'shelf' above the front door - I have some great photos of that place - often we filled the place with burnout smoke, etc etc aahhh reminiscing - 1980 thru 1986 basically - after that it was the Jump Club ( Labour Club) . It was a sad day when Greggs closed, all we had then was Beggars ( still, it was a cut above the Hungry Horse brrrrrrrrr skank paradise )

z-beast - I would love to try Elf out one day, it was not allowed in the PCRA, but other racer boys always spoke highly of it ( if a bit $$$$)

I use "Tool" but i'm not an original Canetoad :oops: .

But then again the Qlders dont use it cause there's a ToolBan check done at the borders, the odd one slips through & we send them WAY North.
It was a condition to not going Daylight saving that they take the tools up north.

However, in all of Canberra, there are, at my last count, three BP servos; City, Manuka and Woden.

Hardly convenient.
