Zx10r intake camshaft.
Hey guys
Took my 2011 zx10r track bike in for its 36,000km service last week. I got an update today on the progress and found out one of the lobes on the Intake Camshaft has been worn down and is looking at being quite an expensive fix and it will get sent off to melbourne for repairs as organised with my mechanic.
I've had a quick look on the net and it looks like I'm just very unlucky.
Any thoughts on what could cause this? And how to prevent these sorts of issues?

Only one of the lobes is worn..?? Wow, that's really bad luck..
Have you had the bike since new..?? was it maintained properly with oil changes etc..??
Pretty strange fault and if it is just the one lobe (which I reckon it will be more) this sounds like a fault from initial manufacturing... (faulty cam from the start)
Have you spoken to Kawasaki about this.??

Haha yes, I wish I got a photo of it. Looks like someone attacked it with an angle grinder.
Had it for a couple of months and only done 2-3 track days on it. I service it every 2 track days.
Not sure how to approach kawasaki as the bike has done 36,000kms and is 3 years old.
Definitely glad I got my valve clearances checked....

Just have a talk to them and see what they say, just leave out your track days from your conversation with themHixi14 wrote:Haha yes, I wish I got a photo of it. Looks like someone attacked it with an angle grinder.

Re: Zx10r intake camshaft.
Caught up with my mechanic at Winton over the weekend. He thinks its most probably caused by previous owner(s) not getting their valve clearance done for financial reasons as one or two of the valves did need a bit of adjustment.
Hes managed to source a second hand camshaft from Sydney and hopefully ill have the bike back by the end of the week with a god awful repair bill

Re: Zx10r intake camshaft.
So, just a bit of an update.
I spoke with my mechanic on Friday, he's sourced a 2nd hand camshaft from Sydney which had already been dropped in the bike. It's going back together today and should be going on the dyno pretty soon to fix some idle issues (Surges whilst the bike is warm)
I asked if he wanted a down payment on Friday and he said it wasn't necessary so I'd imagine it's not too bad.
Seeing as I haven't been able to ride my bike in quite some time I have made a few impulse buys to keep myself entertained.

All up, less than $300

The secondhand camshaft cost me $400 and as for labour I was original quoted $450 for the valve clearance so I'm guessing between $600-$800.stu185 wrote:How much was the cam and did you get a new one?

I've had my eye on those for a while stu.stu185 wrote:Hixi There is a pile of race parts for this model on gumtree
A full ohlins setup would be nice but I'm putting my money towards ride days and track experience for now. That's probably the best investment for the time being until I actually outride the OEM suspension.
