ZX7 wont start

Post by scottyg »

Hi

Went to start the bike the other day (1993 ZX7) and the was a bang and a backfire. tried to start again and the start just makes a clicking noise.
Tried to put it in gear and free up the starter (believing that it was stuck open) the back tyre just skids when the in gear.
Even rocking the bike i can hear the noise of the starter (that starter winding noise).

Any ideas on what i could try ? was going to remove the starter but one of the bolts is hidden behind an assembly so looks like a hell of a task so thoughti would try here first to see if anyone has any ideas

Cheers
Scott

I'm having similar trouble with mine but its intermittent.
I find giving the battery a good charge, rocking the bike in gear then trying to start it works!
I too am looking to change starter motor but have yet to get round to it!

I had the same problem, intermittent clicking etc.
I fiddled with the regulator connection plug, pulled the fuse in & out a few times to ensure a good contact & it started up but failed again after a while so I changed the whole regulator to an old one that came with the bike & it's been good, touch woodYou can bridge the two terminals with a screwdriver or plyers to see if it works the starter, might not be the starter.
Looking forward to the quiet life !

Hi

Will take a look at the regulator but i think its more than that. Its not intermittant and happens all the time, sounds like the starter is stuck when i try and rock the bike due to the high pitched whine i can hear.
Battery is brand new so dont think that is related.

What are the 2 terminals your referring to that i can bridge to see is i can get the starter to budge ?

The 2 threaded posts on the regulator, just bridge them carefully & briefly to see if the starter kicks. I'll try and attach a picture.

How'd you end up going with this? I had a similar problem a while ago, could of sworn it was the starter dying as i'd rock it a bit in gear and most of the time she would fire back up after a bit. But it gradually got worse and worse until one day it just wouldn't turn over at all. Turn the key, front light comes on, hear fuel pump, hit the start button, front light goes out and thats it. Turns out it was the whole circut board that hold the fuses was faulty? Mechanic replaced it and i never had a drama scince. just another opion to look at if you havn't solved it yet.
