Lesson learned from Advanced 1 and not implemented at a junction - result, I got rear ended by a transit van!
While at a standstill waiting at a junction I had the front brake applied, I let off the front brake in anticipation of pulling out of the junction but had a last minute change of heart to let the learner driver in front of me pull away (as she nearly rolled backwards in to me), the driver behind me who could no longer see a brake light on and assuming I would pull away then accelerated into the bike of me and my pillion passenger!!!!!!!
If I had kept the rear brake applied at all times at the junction and while pulling away I would probably have avoided this incident (even though it still the van drivers fault of course).
A few weeks ago I had a bloke run straight in to me at walking pace while I was sitting still - he was looking down at his phone. Wouldn't be surprised if he got a visual clue the traffic was moving, looked back at his phone as he started moving off and hit you.
You need not worry about what you did, it's when you're stopping and a car hasn't stopped behind you yet when you really need to be vigilant - that's when the closing speed can be high and so is the danger
Commuting these days or simply riding in traffic really bothers me. The incidences that I have seen drivers NOT paying attention TO THE ROAD IN FRONT has spiralled out of control and it really pisses me off !. Fatalities will occur...

Happened to me when stationary at junction of Pennant Hills Rd and M4. Sitting there minding my own business when I got rear ended on 2 day old bike. No damage but when I went to open the car door and give the prick a dose, saw it was a bloke around 80 with a breathing cylinder on his lap trying to work out how to get to Westmead Hospital. WTF he shouldn't have even been on the road!
He was probably on facebook at the time......see I told you lot.
Tim's spot on though mate. Watch out when you first stop, keep your eyes in your mirrors to see whats approaching and make sure you've always got an escape route if the car behind is going to keep coming. In the one you've just had I don't think there is much else you could have done although these days now that we can lane split I always go to the front of the queue to avoid those situations.

Driving in traffic everyday as a tech has maintained my skill for the avoidable. I always monitor my rear and front and always look ahead of the car in front of the car in front to give me a decisive impulse to avoid drama.
Unfortunately most drivers are not riders and most will make more mistakes. No offence to those who don't ride, but I think riders can make better drivers.
As a rider, This has made me a far better driver than the average guy. I am always on the alert. I can anticipate the other drivers move before he/she can deliver it.

agree 100% about riders making better drivers glad nobody was hurt - and the answer to your question is that having the rear brake on would have made SFA difference really.

He should have called an ambulance. Gee wizz.
Where does it end ? have we seen it all ? Probably not.
Defensive riding/driving will be all the rage, even at standstill.
