ADRs and speedos

Post by greenman43 »

Hi all, does anyone know the legal requirement for speedos in terms of age before kmh is required ?

Looking at a clock set for the Mk II, new repro is a bit exxy but easy to find good clocks from the US (especially being pre-85 mph law). But, of course they're calibrated in mph; am I going to get through rego with a mph speedo on a 1980 bike ?

Thanks,
Brian

" .... as for Brian's question if the bike came with mph speedo it will be fine for rego if not some people get a km sticker for the glass but not sure if that's good enough to pass cause the odometer will still be in miles. What's wrong with the original? It's probably repairable? "

Oz went metric in 1966 - so a 1980 MkII definitely had a 240kmh speedo  - not sure any rego place would be happy with a mph speedo.....

Back in the late 60's through to early 70's though, many speedo's had both markings on the dial.......

Many thanks Tim. The bike came without clocks, so nothing there to repair ! Looks like I need to keep a close watch on ebay, or get some repros.

Cheers,

Cheers Gos, I remember my old XA Falcon definitely showed mph, so not sure when the AD rchangeover was. Anyway, looks like I'd better try to find some metric clocks. Or get an imperial set and replace / recalibrate the speedo.

some metric clocks should be easy to source ? I can't recall when the ADR changeover was either, my HT GTS Monaro had a mph speedo as well ;)

My 1970 Torana had a mph speedo .... you could buy a speedo face overlay from accessory shops, which had both km/h and mph.

Dashboards were easily disassembled back then .... 8)

My '72 Torana had a km/h speedo, so I'm guessing it changed over in '71 ??
I've spent over 40 years of my life riding bikes .... the rest of it, I wasted ..

I've put three bikes through one mob no issues, after market exhausts, fender eliminators, Bandit didn't even come off the trailer  Let me know, but no guarantees ;)
