re: G series is Gangsta?
I used to have a G-series... wrote it off. Don't think that's a problem with the bike tho!
But seriously, never had a problem with it.

re: G series is Gangsta?
I just went for the "J" over the "G" due to the headlights (love my front cowl).... other than that, i don't think that there is much diff. betwn the two (that you'd notice).....
Definitely an awesome bike!

re: G series is Gangsta?
so the only real difference in the J and G series is cosmetic? there werent any major changes to the bike?

That's right mate,it's just the cosmetical changes between the G and J, and if you like the look of the G then grab one,i had a G for 6 years, great bike and i had no problems with mine in that time, apart from losing my licence 3 times on it......
The older i get,the faster i was..........

re: G series is Gangsta?
has anyone here in melboure been to clipstone yamaha in ringwood?
if you have you may have seen the red J series zx6r. it is only 6500$ but i think it may have had a crash because i noticed a dented tank.
anyone else seen this one? had a go at it?

If a dealer's got an asking price of $6500 on it, it's a pretty safe bet that bike's very, very tired.biatchy wrote:has anyone here in melboure been to clipstone yamaha in ringwood?

To answer your other question, about diffs between G's and J's, there are no huge changes, but plenty of substantial ones...
-ignition changed from HT leads and remote coils to plug-cap integrated coils.
-cylinder block went from pressed-in sleeves to NiCaSil plated bores.
-instruments were changed from servo to stepper-motor drive.
-carbs sprouted de-icing from standard (on G's, it was a retrofit you had to ask for).
-Swingarm construction switched to internal bracing.
The two are pretty much identical to sit on, and there are a lot of interchangable parts, but the J is ever-so-perceptibly faster and more composed than the G. Calling it just a cosmetic update would be a bit shallow.

mate i had a 99 model..it was wild, handles a treat, never had a problem with it....was a choice ride...
if the tanks dented, it sounds like a big drop, tanks are bloody expensive to replace (try $1500ish)...

Re: re: G series is Gangsta?
Rubbish. Wreckers have trouble getting more than $300 for immaculate ex-Japan tanks they get. I got one for my ZX9 for $220.neka79 wrote:if the tanks dented, it sounds like a big drop, tanks are bloody expensive to replace (try $1500ish)...
I've got a spare ZX6 tank with a few paint blemishes, and I wouldn't want more than $150 for it.
re: G series is Gangsta?
nice to hear the actual factual differences between the two, thanks I-K... I knew there were some but didn't know what they were (and I DID know of a few of the ones you mentioned, but forgot!)

re: G series is Gangsta?
Love my G1, but with each following model the 6 got lighter, faster, better handling like most bikes. The first 636 is of corse the ultimate developement of the shape. Comes down to dollars. If you have 7k to play with you can do a whole lot worse than a G.

Real bravery is being afraid but doing it anyway.

but he should be able to get 2002 636 for about $9000. For extra 2000 you get a lot more of a bike
