ZXR/GSXR brake upgrade
ZXR/GSXR brake upgrade
Have finally given up on the standard ZXR brakes on my track bike so after a bit of research (and a handy bit of advice) I'm seriously considering using the callipers and master cylinder from a K1/K2 GSXR1000 which I'm told, with a bit of persuasion, will bolt up and offer much more braking power!
Any experience or advice?!?
Cheers

Re: ZXR/GSXR brake upgrade
I fitted up a set of K1/2 callipers onto my ZX6R F1 (1995). The bolt holes are the same spacing and the swept area and vertical alignment don't require any spacers. Are the ZXR the same callipers as F1 ZX6 ???

Not sure but speaking to a few people and looking on a website I usually refer to I believe I'll need to have spacers made but shouldn't be too difficult!

Re: ZXR/GSXR brake upgrade
I am going to upgrade my ZXR 750 front brakes to ZX7R 6 pot calipers, I just received a pair of calipers today from the USA for $50US along with a lower triple clamp for $25US, I am waiting on a new ZX7R front guard to clear customs, I should have it tomorrow, Then I will hunt up some ZX7R fork tubes & complete the conversion using my stock ZXR 750 top triple clamp, The triple clamp stem bearings are the same so I will just use the later model bearings, Wont take long to change it all over either
Re: ZXR/GSXR brake upgrade
Most people have difficulty finding the one piece spacers - or someone to make them. On the ZZR1100 we just used a 10x8mm tube and a washer. Make sure you put a washer on the outside as well, as the heads on the m8 bolts are smaller than the original m10. We didn't change the master cylinder.
At one stage we asked an engineer to drill and tap the caliper to take an m10 bolt (so all it would require is a washer) , but he wouldn't touch it. Said it wouldn't leave enough metal.

I've been quoted $150 to have the sleeves made by Extreme Creations but am waiting for a mate to get back to me about doing it!
Have already sourced the M8 high tensile cap screws!

Re: ZXR/GSXR brake upgrade
Little bit pricey but Extreme Creations do good work, Any machine shop should be able to make them up for $50 maybe?
Re: ZXR/GSXR brake upgrade
Hopefully so; have been quoted $250 for the pair of callipers so all up shouldn't be too expensive an upgrade, so long as the MC's are the same!

Re: ZXR/GSXR brake upgrade
Little bit pricey for the calipers, As mentioned I got a set of ZX7R calipers from the USA for $50US for the pair, With a set of EBC HH pads in both calipers with about 90% left on them also, The brake pads are worth more than the calipers here in OZ, The average price in the USA for later model GSXR front calipers is about $40 for a pair, You should be able to find a set of K1/K2 calipers for around the same price?>

Re: ZXR/GSXR brake upgrade
I should be able to change over my front end to later model ZX7R forks & brakes for around $300 - $400 roughly
Much less after I sell the old parts of course too
With the ZX7 forks you get rebound, compresion, and preload adjustmend. ZXR,s only have preload and rebound adjustment

Re: ZXR/GSXR brake upgrade
Waaay too pricey IMO. We did the whole job - calipers, spacers and braided lines - for a bit over $200.JimZXR wrote:I've been quoted $150 to have the sleeves made by Extreme Creations but am waiting for a mate to get back to me about doing it!
