Hey Nick, I just about bought a KLR once, the dealer wouldn't come to the party when negotiating a trade for my Ducati so I walked away and ended up with a KTM640 adventure which was an awesome bike :D
A great source of information for adventure riding is the Adventure rider forums ( who'd have thunk  )
And they have a very active Aussie section with a great bunch of guys, if you haven't already seen it have a look at http://www.advrider.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=32 have fun on the KLR 8)
