Fuel tap problem Over fueling??

Post by parto »

Hey

Ive got a ZXR 250 that i have just received that needed alot of TLC

It hadn't been running for 5 years before i got it. Ive stripped and cleaned everything and it now runs.

But after the first time i ran it the next morning there was a pool of fuel underneath it. After inspection i noticed it was running out of the headers and somewhere around the carby.

I pulled the fuel hose off the tap and it doesn't matter which position its in ( ON/PRI/RES) it still has fuel coming out???

Can somebody point me in the right direction

Cheers

doesnt matter if you leave your tap on or not,it will be your carbies that need attention.

You tried primary, reserve and on. But did you try off?

But as mentioned, your carb floats sound like they are sticking.

Primary ?????

Prime
On
Reserve

sounds to me like the fuel tap is stuffed. They should only flow in the 'prime' position, not 'On' or 'Res'. And you probably need to take the carbies off, take the float bowls off, and clean all the crap out of the needle & seats in every float bowl. One or more of these is sticking and contributing to the fuel leak.

The tap doesn't show off only On Prime & Res

It has the smaller Tube on the back of the tap for the balance carby tube??

With the tank off the fuel flows fast on prime and just a dribble on Reserve and on.

Just to mention the carbys and fuel tap and Tank looked like somebody had poured Honey through them it had been sitting for so long
Ive stripped the carbys and cleaned everything as best i can as well as the fuel tap and tank?

The bike was running on 3 untill i took it for a quick run up the road then it came good.

Maybe it just needs a longer run

The hose going to the tap from the carbies is vaccum. Fuel should only come out when in the ON/RES position when the bikes running (vaccum from the carbs) so try taking it apart and cleaning and check by sucking on the hose :P :P prime should flow free as its used to prime the carbs before starting :)

And as said before clean the carbs again :)
anyone can go fast in a straight line,,,,

It's the oring in the fuel tap that's knackered. However thers something else up with the carbs ie needle valves or float heights
It's really all about standing around drinking Dave's beer.

cheers
Like i said everything was really gummed up!
Ive stripped evrything and cleaned them but maybe i need to do the carby's again.
So when the fuel tap is on Res/On no fuel should be coming out??

Does anybody know what will disolve the fuel residue? i tried everything but nothing disolved it i had to use a small needle to unblock all the jets etc, I have heard that vinigar will do it but havn't tried it yet.

Thanks guys

this is the best stuff - pressure-pak carbie cleaner. Spray it inside the carbie and fuel tap and blow dry with compressed air. This shit will disolve all the old fuel residue and gummed-up cankus.

Fuel should only flow out of a vacumn tap in the 'Prime' position. The smaller tube from the back/side of the fuel tap should hook up to a tube on the #1 or #2 inlet - this is the where the vacumn signal comes from. If the tap is only dribbling a bit in 'On' or 'Res' - than as Glenno says, its just an o-ring that needs replacing.

Thanks guys

Are you talking about the o ring that sits under the front of the tap?

As for the Carby cleaner it didn't remove shit!!
This stuff was baked on like a overcooked pork roast i tried soaking the components in everything nothing broke it down

HAve you checked the o-ring seal around the float bowl?

If you haven't removed it when you're cleaning the parts with carb cleaner it may have been damaged by the spray. Worth a look!
