A family outing at a state forest near Wagga Wagga turned tragic yesterday afternoon when a boy, six, was seriously hurt after a trail bike landed on him, police say.
The boy was with his family in the Berry Jerry State Forrest about 3.20pm when he wandered onto a trail bike track, in an empty dam, Detective Inspector Jeff Barr of Wagga Wagga Local Area Command said.
"When the trail bike rider came over the jump, the boy was standing right on the other side of it," he said.

"It's a location, as with a lot of locations in country areas, where people may go from time to time on the weekend to maybe ride a motorcycle or sit down by the bank of the creek and do some fishing."
Police and paramedics treated the boy in the forest and he was taken to Wagga Wagga Base Hospital before being flown to The Children's Hospital in Randwick.
Detective Inspector Barr said the boy was in a medically induced coma at The Children's Hospital with head injuries, but that his condition had improved and he was now stable.
The trail bike rider, a 35-year-old man, "was quite distraught over the accident and has fully co-operated with police", Detective Inspector Barr said.
The man returned a negative result in a breath test, underwent mandatory blood and urine tests at a hospital, and was interviewed by police about the circumstances around the incident, he said.
Detective Inspector Barr said he was "just a normal guy out having a bit of fun on the weekend".
