Side Stand issue - 98 ZX9

Post by Jim Jim »

Hi All,

I have a problem with the switch on my side stand.

Every morning I have to kick in the stand at least 3 to 4 times to make sure that the Switch disengages so I can release the clutch all the way out. If it doesnt disengage I have no power at all once I let the clutch all the way out.
I dont have a center stand on the bike so I cant even just put it on that when I get home.

This only happens in the morning. So it cant be an issue with it being cold or sitting on the stand for to long as I am at work for at least 10 hours a day and its never a problem in the evening on my way home.

I am wondering if its possible to A) replace the switch or B) remove it completely.

I have googled it, But all I am getting is just how to replace the side stand.
Its not cold in Canberra, Your just a GIRL!!!!

pretty sure you can do both, plenty of people remove the switch or bypass it, my brothers was dinky and he just cable tied it shut to test if it was that and it was, if you wish to remove it you have to connect the two wires together by either cutting the plug of, or connecting the pins in the plug together.

i've never done it on a 9 just google side stands switch removal or side stand switch bypass.

but in saying all that, i doubt it would even be that as its only doing it once in the morning an then not again.

anyway cable tie it shut and that should tell you if its that or not, i don't know if i have been any help but good luck.

Just join the 2 wires together & use some electrical tape around them then cable tie the join back to the wire clip...... it is an open circuit to start with the stand down so basically you are closing the circuit ;)

Like I've said elsewhere, just clean the switch, it'll be gunked up with chain lube

Had the same issue with the 10. i just put the stand up reach down and rotate the switch clock wise and no probs.
Could fix it but might also work as anti theft for any bastard trying to steal my pride and joy 8)

Used to have a similar problem on my 1100. The switch on the 1100 is just a simple plunger switch. With the stand down the switch is depressed and when the stand is retracted the plunger extends. The 1100 switch gets sticky in the cold and takes about 30 seconds to fully extend. The simple fix in my case was to drown it in CRC or WD40 at the first sign of it happening and it would usually be fine all winter. I think the rubber seal on it goes hard and drags on the plunger. Which would explain why summer was never a problem, the higher temperature would keep the rubber softer and more pliable.
