22/10/78 Amaroo Park...NUTS!!!
if you know how NASTY the CBX & especially the XS1100 were when pushed in corners THIS WILL BLOW YOU AWAY!!!!
it'd be bad enough sorting the flex to corner that CBX but those XS1100 guys must have been fuckin' nuts...
the XS was really a "sport cruiser"...LOL...gobs of torque a drive-shaft & shit suspension on a BIG bike made for some spooky corners...
but the pull was incredible for back then...
like a missile on the straights & like a WATERBED IN CORNERS...LOL

They were great races Jeff. Used to be an institution here in Sydney but unfortunately dissappeared not long after Amaroo shut down. Did a few years at Oran Park but it wasn't the same.
The dip in the right hander going up Bitupave Hill used to be a classic.
Awesome find. There's a few TV specials that get a run here every now and then on the old 6 hour races.

It's really all about standing around drinking Dave's beer.

Fantastic footage, what was with the massive run up at the start? normally the le-mans start is only from the other side of the track.
Those xs1100's where evil, I remember the Yamaha supported lads back in the UK having to race them in the mcn streetbike series against cb1100r's and gsx1100's.

ah i must have lost a year somewhere

it was the year jimmy fell off while they were leading there class, hailwood was unreal, so smooth on that thing, remember walking around the pitts after the race, and his left leg covered in blood, where he dragged his boot and wore it away and ground his toes down

I was competing in one of the last race meets to be held at Amaroo in a PCRA club round, this place was an institution but was bloody hard to race at compared to Oran Park & the Creek, lots of stacks & limited run off were not a good highlight, its bloody sad to see the demise of any racetrack to the developers. Did my first Stay Upright course there 28 years ago & can still remember it clear as day, it was the best intro to road riding ever!

Re: 22/10/78 Amaroo Park...NUTS!!!
I did hundreds of laps around Amaroo, from 1978 to 1989 on dozens of different bikes, then it nearly killed me. I never went back there untill the day after it closed, & did a few laps around it in my car just to have one last look at the place.
It was my favorite track execpt for Bathurst of couse. It was fast very much like Lakeside, but it was easy to learn & with some practice C & B graders could mix it with A graders, it was that sort of track, a bit of a level'r you could only seem to go so fast didnt matter what grade you were in.
I raced a CBX around there for a full season in 79 & loved every lap.
I was there for almost every 6 Hour from 75 untill it went to Oran pk. Funny thing was I never raced a 6 hour, just never got around to it I suppose.

Oh & I was in this race on a RZ500 Yamaha, [hated that bike], you get a glimps of me with the white top & blue bottom leathers. Mid grid, row 4. 2nd from the left got a good start & went backwards from there.

When did it shut down I know it was roughly late 90's for housing?
I remember amaroo went there one day in school holidays and road my pushie round there with some school holiday thing they organised. Still remember watching the touring cars there.
