The ZRX...it lives!!!!!!!!
I think/hope/would like to seriously consider as a valid hypothesis....................
After a big day of spannering and troubleshooting with the Hoff at the El Rancho Glenno it appears the ZRX is sorted...kind of.
If you remember I had the initial problem of an intermittent low rev miss when you got up it which then developed into the bike not running on cylinders two and three.
I initially took the bike to Craig at C and M who couldn't work out the low rev miss but thought he got the jetting right. This was my first mistake.
He run the bike on his dyno and found it way to lean down low and rich up top. Found that the previous owner did some weird shit tuning wise and tried to fix it. Put a Factory pro kit in it which uses the stock 95 mains plus the Factory Pro 98 mains. Was still too rich so he dropped it to the stock 92 mains and some 90 mains on the outside. This got the average A/F ratio OK but it still missed. Today we found the problem and the very basic thing he missed. The dickhead who messed with it before drilled the stock jets out to about 120. Craig used these jets assuming they were 95/92's. As soon as we looked at the diameter of the jet you could almost suck a thickshake through it.
So today Hoff and I pulled the carbs out and jetted it with the stock stage 1 factory pro set up (with some 95 mains I got from Mick at CHM).
Put it all back together with new coils and leads, fired it up and shit still dead on 2 and 3.
Pulled the arse apart to get at the CDI, messed with the wiring and plugs into the cdi, hit the CDI a couple of times for good measure with a screwdriver and hey presto it fires.
Put the storage compartment back in the tail, fire it up and phaaaark dead on 2 and 3. It appearrs the storage compartment presses on the wiring into the CDI whick kills 2 and 3 so it looks like there is a bodgey connection there somewhere. Leave the compartment out and it runs fine.
So we've had two problems
1. Jetting screwed up by dickhead previous owner/mechanic and then fucked up again by Craig at C and M. This explains the low rev miss. It fuels up when you go slow then you get up it and it clears. If I had have left the jetting as craig did it it would've been way rich on the inside cylinders and piston holing lean on the outside two. The lesson learned....don't trust anyone with shit like that on your bike. Take it to someone you know well or do it yourself
2. Bodgey connection to the CDI which explaind the total ot running on 2 and 3. Lesson learned? No idea but hitting shit with a hammer seems to work sometimes plus really stupis shit occasionally happens.
Went for a ride over to Hoffinator enterprises Head Office this arvo and it run like a charm. I'll need to give it some good runs to test it but at least I now know where the problem is.
Massive thanks to Hoff for a big day on the spanners today and picking bits up and throwing around ideas for the last few weeks and Chrisso for helping us get the bastard carbs back on, Phil for the regular consultations over the phone and the inspiration to keep going until I got it sorted and Marty for the offer of borrowing parts from his Rex to try and find the problem, plus everyone else who suggested potential problems and fixes. IIts been a frustrating experience but getting it seemingly sorted is extremely satisfying.

Should've employed the Hoff from the start. Would've been sorted in no time!

Re: The ZRX...it lives!!!!!!!!
Good work Glen & Hoff but you have far more patience than me!
I would have been very tempted to dump it in a bin (or under a trailer) long before now.
Happy riding and long live the king!

I was soo happy last night when I spoke to Glen and heard the story - happy that is now sorted that is and Glenno can get back to loving the ZRX
.
Incedentially I have just come back from a ride on mine with the new ELS genuine +4 advancer, ELS starter chain tensioner fix and I am more smitten than ever. Even gave Big Al a go and when we were pulling up at the end of the ride Big Al indicated he was continuing on - on my ZRX

Let that be a lesson to all. CHECK THE SIMPLE THINGS FIRST YOU IDIOT!!!!
