Re: chrome wheels
Cheapest option is to find a dedicated metal polishing company (marine industry has tons of them lots of stainless to polish on boats)
So pull wheels off, remove tyres and rotors give to xxxx polishing co.
Have beer, wait some more, have more beer. Pick wheels up, pay, go WOW that looks so good.
Take to Spray painter get a extra thick layer of clear coat put on. Put tyre, rotors back on, put wheels back on. Sit in garage and marvel at the sweetest looking zx you've ever seen.
So yeah easy really. for reference i had 4 aluminium car wheels polished to a 1200 grit, guy charged $35 a rim picked them up and dropped them off same day he said if i had got the tyres removed he could have got them to a perfect mirror finish. with 1200 it was nearly mirror finish. These prices are from 2003.

Re: chrome wheels
in my opinion i wouldn't get them clear coated after they are polished as the clear will go yellowish over time, tried it before on a few things when i was a painter an it will always do it, best bet is to just keep them polished up.
if you have the patience you can polish them your self with wet rub but it does take a fair bit of time and even though i know i can do it i would still pay somebody else as they can do it alot faster

Thats a good point i had my wheels with the clear for 3 years they never yellowed but the clear started to flake off over time.TONY-J wrote:in my opinion i wouldn't get them clear coated after they are polished as the clear will go yellowish over time, tried it before on a few things when i was a painter an it will always do it, best bet is to just keep them polished up.

In reality unless the bike is a daily, it wouldn't really see rain very often and probably gets washed all the time so clear coat is no big issue.
Yeah i don't have the patience to polish anymore i have done 2 full exhaust systems and it was painfull but i also used a 5.5kw buffing & cutting wheel so that speeds up the process up a little

Re: chrome wheels
Hey Philbo, I checked out getting my rims polished a while ago but just haven't got around to it yet.....
The best option I came up with, was a guy in the same factory complex at Penrith as Mick Dyer (bike mechanic). I can't recall his name or the cost, but Mick knows him and Mick will also strip your wheels and tyres, so you just ride out there and ride back when it's done. (The Peachtree Hotel is in walking distance while you wait
)
Contact Details are: Mick Dyer Motorcycles Unit 8, 121 Coreen Ave Penrith. Ph. 02 4721-1729

Re: chrome wheels
why dont you once all polished up go get em chromed that way it lasts and when its time to clean its alot easier and the results are much much better if all the polishing and hard work has been done rather then just paint strip and chrome
this is my only hesitation on getting mine chromed was A)not sure if id like it and B) having my bike off the road for a day or 2 would make things awkward as its a daily ride....
