Now, importing from them seems to be alot cheaper if you wanna buy a leather jacket for example. Now, here the jacket is $850 - $899 if you shop around.. if I order it from kneedraggers (an american online bike store) it will cost approx $500 including postage (AUD) and will only take 8-10 days to arrive. If you wanna receive it in a garunteed 2 days then that costs $200 AUD.

I would much rather wait 10 days and save almost half the price.. true?
just sharing it with you all before you think about buying an $899 alpinestars jacket

just a word of warning re importing
this is reasonably complex area and there are lots of tales & myths around
re what you can and can't do....

make sure you know the difference between items for entry
vs items for duty/GST..they are different and this catches out a lot
of people

best bet is to try and get the sender to mark it 'gift'
otherwise you can be up for a bit extra if Customs
or Aussie Post check it out

A friend of mine in the states bought me a brand new Teknic Lightning jacket and brought it with him to Australia for me. All up, it cost him $US120. He got it cheap because it was black, white and GREEN.

How much does shipping cost to Aus? I am in the market for boots and from those places the boots are 1/2 to 2/3 of the price you pay here, its insane the markup over here

if you want it delivered in 2 days garunteed.. its $200
but if you want to wait 8-10 days its approx. $80 for a leather jacket..
i recommend the 8-10days lol .. its alot cheaper

not so sure about boots.. email them and tell them what u want and give them ur address.. theyll tell u how much it will cost to send it to u ..

im in sydney so its a diff prices for every part of australia id say ..

It's a double edged sword, it would be nice to support local businesses, they have to pay rent, wages, electricity etc, and have to import the items themselves, so they need to make a profit, therefore higher prices.
But.. they also have to understand that the consumer is a lot more savvy when it comes to shopping around, the interenet and overseas shopping is available quite easily, and if we have the option to save money we're entitled to that option..
I'm looking at buying a suit from overseas.. it saves me $300, I'd love to give that to a local company, but I can't justify spending that money if I don't have to..

Beware with importing clothing...you're looking at massive duties. Marking as gifts doesn't always work either, as it only applies up to a certain value ($250 i think). If you're going to get a jacket sent in marked as a gift worth $100, that's all you'll be able to insure it for, and the duty is payable on all costs to get it into the country (i.e. postage and insurance as well as purchase price).

I looked at the options a while ago, and decided to buy locally with a mob that import from the states themselves, and keep the prices well below normal retail (something like $1200 for an Alpinestars 2-pc worth about $1600) rather than doing it myself. Was only about $100 difference, and the risks weren't mine.

If anyone's interested in the site address, i'll check it out on my work computer and post it up. They do all sorts of Alpinestars gear at far cheaper prices than in the shop, but they do take a while to get it to you.
