Extracting a few more horses

Post by StuMiller »

Hi all,

I have a 99 ZX6 track bike and looking to "juice it up a bit".

I already have a BMC race air filer and Megacycle pipe, but want a bit more go.

Throw some simple and cost effective ideas my way.

Cheers!

if you don't want to spend much money then:
- jet kit
- ignition advancer
- full exhaust system
or just change your gearing for more acceleration :kuda:

Jet kit seems to be a popular choice.....

Suppliers / how hard are they to install etc?

As already said change the gearing first. I had a 97 ZX7r that pulled like an old goat, changed the gearing and it made a big difference, it will be the cheapest mod you can do to gain a little more grunt down low.

Issue with a jet kit is balancing them, run to rich and foul plugs, too lean and melt pistons (though you will get a boost in power) if you haven't done it before would recommend someone doing it for you and watching what and how.

maybe an ignition advancer ?

new cam chain will also make a difference, as will a carbie balance after the jet-kit has been fitted.

Once you do all these cheap & cheerful mods.......get the suspension tuned. This will get you better times than anything else.

Easiest way to cut a few seconds from your lap times...

Correct rated springs/set up. I paid $60 at Winton and got the twiddly bits twiddled after each session worked wonders.

Superbike school - make better use of the power you have rather than spend money on going faster in a straight line and having to brake earlier.

Once your lap times cannot increase due to the lack of power then...

Ensure the ignition system is at peak performance for the best spark (makes more difference than some will give credit to). Uprated plugs, clean contacts, renew HT leads etc.

Quick action throttle

Jet kit. advancement tuning/time on the dyno

Strip off excess weight

From there it's all about big $$$ for small rewards, shave head to reduce clearences, gas flow polish & post,. High lift cams, big bucket valves, lighten crank/piston con rod bearings etc.

The most reduction in lap time will be rider training

I've had the susoension done by Mornington Kawasaki, they put heavy duty springs on board and dialed it all in for me. I guess now, practice will speed things up a bit and school I'm sure will do wonders. I'll keep an eye out for the jet kit....

Cheers all!!

Factory Pro has jet kits and ignition advancers, Mick Hone is supposed to their Aust distributor or you could directly to them (probably cheaper at moment due to exhange rate)
