'Revving' High

Hey guys

I am new to bikes and was wondering if someone can offer some advice.

A few months a go I got my first bike (a ZX-2R, 1990) and it was going fine. Lately though, when I stop at traffic lights/intersections it revs higher than normal (i.e. 4k) for a couple of seconds before the revs come back down. The temp seems to go up a bit quicker as well.

Any suggestions?

Sticky throttle cable or Carbies need a good cleaning, could be the answer & as for temp if it revs higher then the temp will rise, especially on the hot days we have been having.

Thanks, I think the bike is in need of a service anyway. Will it cost a lot to get the carbies cleaned? Also, can anyone give an indication of the approx cost of a service in Brisbane (and do they change everything like spark plugs, air filter, coolant etc.), just wondering what they include in a standard service?

Cheapest way is to so it yourself :shock:
May as well learn right from the begining and you will save an absolute
fortune doing it all yourself!

How many ks has it got mate and did you get an indication of service history from the last owner?

Like seiko said if you're keen to learn and save some money changing your oil and filter is definately worthwhile learning to do as a start.... Any1 know what's the filter access like on those?

filters are easy to get to ;)
coolant change, oil and filter, and air filter is something you can tackle yourself mate. Its pretty easy on that bike, i can do a run down for ya, i have done it many a times to mine :lol: .
also getting to the carbs is just one more step and can be done by a newb, its troubling at first but once youv'e done it you'll get alot of satifaction out of it cause you have learnt alot about basic bike tinkering and saved alot of coin 8)
anyone can go fast in a straight line,,,,

What are your coolant levels like, and does the bike have manual or auto choke? If there is no choke lever need to start it, it's auto.

I ask coz it sounds like the auto choke is activating (raising the revs), and this can happen when there is no water around the sensor - it's an outside chance, but a posibility.

The coolant level is ok and the bike has a manual choke (I actually have to hold it on).

I will look into getting all the required items to give the service a go (air filter, coolant, oil, oil filter - are there any others? spark plugs?). Would there be an actual service manual around for this bike.

No doubt someone here will have the service manual available for you.
Plugs and an extension socket for them maybe!
Also a new seal for the sump plug........not really necessary, I've never needed to change one yet!

zxr250c manual may still be available here http://www.japi.com.ar if its an A model 2 x round headlights guessing general maintenance duration and levels should be the same as not alot of difference between the two...............

Perhaps there is a bit missing from the clutch mechanism. Perhaps a spring or the bit of metal/plastic that it retains against the lever. I had that happen to my choke, easy fix to replace.

What revs does it normally at before this happens???

You can do adjustment with the little nob which is on the left hands side near your fuel switch......this will also adjust your idle

Get your carbs cleaned and sync'd. shes outa tune.
