Nice one Rob, ;)

One of these days I should get one similar, of course it would help if I knew how to use one  ..... what's the easiest to use or learn on, by the way?

Pete we use a heap of equipment that gets worn & needs repair & we make up frames etc for one off signage, it became necessary for me to do it myself to save time & money. I started off with a small stick welder 15 years ago then moved onto a second hand Mig, mind you stick welding is harder. I learnt by trial & error & by hanging around Scott (side car racer) a professional welder & getting some tips from him by hanging around the shed on weekends. I was having a look on YouTube the other day about advanced techniques for a tricky job I have coming up.....I found the answer & also found there is a ton of info on there even for an absolute beginner.
This is a good clip to show you the absolute basics on Mig Welding, its a bit long but everything said is relevant & the demo at the end shows its not as easy as it looks

As with anything Pete the more you do the better you get, I would suggest hire some gear first & get some scrap metal to practice on & have fun :D

Just watched it thanks Rob, it's very informative, shall look at some more on youtube :kuda:
Is yours a gas or gasless one and which is better? What kind of capacity would one look for just for odd things around the place? (knowing that large jobs are gonig to take a bit longer, but that's OK)

Pete Gas is easier, you would use Gasless in outdoor conditions or in windy situations but the weld is not as good as a gas one I would suggest up to 180 amp but higher than that & you will need a 15 amp outlet or 3 phase
My new one has a 30-180 amp welding output range which is good for jobs up to about 6mm thick steel & I use a (0.9 mm) wire.

Thanks Rob, that's an incredible help. :kuda:

I take it the gas is the same as household gas?

I might get back to you later to find out make/brand etc..and things to look out for when purchasing.

The only thing I know is that Imore than likely to buy it on evilbay, unless some local outlet will match the deals that you can get there.

Argon Gas for steel welding, its an inert gas, household gas would explode
The gas forms around the weld to keep the oxygen out or away from the weld..... Oxygen it your worst enemy when welding ;)

The gas is an argon base or CO2 but the specific type will vary depending on the thickness and type of material you are welding to.

Here's a good site, Pete. http://www.mig-welding.co.uk/

And the gas is NOT household stuff !!!!
I've spent over 40 years of my life riding bikes .... the rest of it, I wasted ..
If it's got wheels or tits, it's gonna give you trouble !
