hi,
I was looking down the air-scoop of my ZX6R J1 yesterday and saw something weird/crappy. The air-flow into the enclosed air-box is actually through two small raised pipes, so although it is technically a ram-air system it is sub-optimal to say the least (prob using <10% of the available air-flow).
I assume this was done to get around noise regs? I was wondering if Kwaky originally designed it that way or if they had to change it at the end of the design stage?
I know ram-air systems are a complete bitch to setup properly but I was wondering if anyone has modded the standard box to use the full amount of available air-flow and re-tuned to suit?
There must be a racing equivalent (without the 'restrictors') has anyone got any info?
Done properly it should give slightly increased power and a great induction noise, done badly and it would just screw-up the air/fuel mixture and make the bike unusable.

If you're looking into the front of the bike and seeing 2 small pipes within the tubes and thinking that's all there is to the ram-air you've made the wrong assumption.
I pretty sure it's similar to the ram-air system on the ZZR600 - the large tubes go directly into the air box for the ram-air effect, the small pipes you're seeing feed into the carbs to balance them out.

If you have no fear, you're not going fast enough.

Yep, as Tony said, those 2 rubber pipes are the cold air intakes for the carbs, not the ram air. The ram air is the 2 big plastic tubes going into the frame and then the air box. If you want to improve them, toss the resonators and make them straight through. The resonators were there to keep the intake noise down.

So if there are resonators in the tubes, what's the easiest way or removing them, going through the air-box or from the front on the bike?MadKaw wrote:Yep, as Tony said, those 2 rubber pipes are the cold air intakes for the carbs, not the ram air.
