Calling all hoarders!!

Post by nut_kawaka »

Just thought this might be interesting...

Picked up my first big bike two weeks ago, a 1993 ZZR600. It was a little neglected by the previous owners, so I've been busy fixing a few small things, and generally cleaning it up.

So I go to replace the brake fluid on the front, cause god knows when it was last checked. Go to unscrew the bolts on the reservoir, DOH! One of them had been completely munted. Whipped out the bolt extractor, done!

But I hadn't counted on bolts becoming a consumable during a brake fluid change, and being 4pm on a Saturday afternoon, and the bolt having an odd thread and counter sunk head, I thought everything was going to be on hold till Monday.

Its times like these, being related to a hoarder is a real bonus. My Dad has always hoarded all sorts of crap, but as I found on the weekend, he really likes small metallic fasteners. Specifically odd bolts. He has thousands of them. Some of them organised, but mostly not.

Dropped over to Dad's place, tipped a biscuit tin full on the outside table, and started sorting. Had two brand new bolts for the brake reservoir, right thread, right length within 10 mins. Woohoo! Job done.

But, to be completely honest, this is the first instance of my 26 years that being related to a hoarder has actually been helpful.

Anyone else had a hoarding 'eureka' moment?

Those bolts are notourious, they are designed to turn to chocolate just before you apply pressure to undo them. I have replaced the ones on my race bike with a Titanium Allen key version from Tasty Nuts.

As for hoarding, nuts and bolts and spare parts for bikes yes, but most other things, no.
