Riding to MotoGP from QLD GC first time.

Post by aus636 »

So this will be my first ride to the GP this year. I will be going with crue of 12 so should be good. Any suggestion on what path should be taken just to get an idea. How do you boys pack for such a long haul.

DON'T Go the Hume Highway! boring as batshit!
The Coast road is better but can get a bit of traffic and a lot of Cops
Monaro is ok as long as you don't spend too much time on it and keep the speed sensible(ish) when on it
the more detours you can take through the Snowies the more fun you'll have
the Bonang is FUN although there are some dirt sections

I generally take a pair of Undies for every day and a pair of socks for every 2nd day (but don't wear 'em 2 days consecutively ;) ) a pair of Jeans for when I'm there and a T-Shirt and Long sleeve shirt, Jumper ... remember it's Phillip Island so it could be 40 degrees or 4 degrees!
and take a pair of shoes that you can wear around the track so you don't have to clomp around in your bike boots, but make sure they will be ok in Mud (see point above)
Also take a good waterproof jacket (probably a Bike Jacket) and I usually take a good hat to keep the sun off me and a good beanie to keep the snow off me!
Toilet bag full of the usual stuff, and a puncture repair kit, Gaffa tape, electrical tape, cable ties and spare levers .... front brake and clutch, you don't want your whole trip ruined 'cos the bike fell off the sidestand in bumphuck Victoria and you now have no Clutch lever!
If you've packed all this and still have room throw in a first Aid kit!

Most importantly ... Pack a sense of humour! it's amazing what you put up with if you have that! ;)
How's that?

I've also heard of people posting stuff to themselves c/o the Post office down there, ride down and pick it up then post it back on the Monday before you leave, that way you don't need to carry as much stuff with you, just the stuff you need for the actual trip, the stuff you need down there you post down, I guess it sounds good but don't know if it actually works or not!? :?

Yep, I've done this before and it works fine but with three considerations. First up you need to get to the post office before it closes to pick your stuff up. Second up you need to be able to carry the parcel from the post office to wherever you are staying. Thirdly if you are getting an early start on Monday the post office won't be open to send your stuff back until later on, so you might have to get someone else to send it back for you.

Heaps of people do it though, so the nice ladies at the post office in Cowes are used to scruffy bike riders looking for their parcels 8)
