Disk Brake Rotor Machining
Disk Brake Rotor Machining
Hey, I'm currently looking at bying a bike that looks like it's in fantastic condition but the seller assures me that one of the front rotors needs to be machined.
I'm guessing the damage would have to be from a drop or something ??
Does anyone know that the cost of having a disc machined would be ?? and how easy it is to get the rotor off the wheel or do you just take the whole wheel in ?
Also if the bike is in this condition should it be ok to take for a test ride when I go to have a look next week ?
Cheers
Dave.

I dont think there's much meat on Motorcycle discs to machine .I think them they replace them instead but I could be wrong

Re: Disk Brake Rotor Machining
I got my discs replaced, i had to remove the disks and send them to some crowd in Sydney, turn around was about 3 days.... cost about $250 from memory.... but that is nothing compared to buying new ones...

Re: Disk Brake Rotor Machining
Ya can get em machined as per the above and it is around the 200mark each disc so 400-500 all up but I'd be willing to bet they'd warp again, esp with less meat..........
If you're not restricted due to race rules I can highly recommend the BRAKING WAVE Discs I used to use on my Stunt bikes (GSXRs) as the damned GSXRs have got super soft rotors > went thru 6 discs (3sets) over 2 bikes (yes I was flogging the arse outta the brakes on stunt and track days) - spent the $900 for 2 wave rotors and the pads and NEVER had another issue
Galfer a cheaper again but dunno about quality.........

Re: Disk Brake Rotor Machining
I've found out that the the disc is fine, it has scoring. it is not warped.
So does this mean I can get them machined or should it just get replaced ?
What's the cost difference ? If it's around 200 for machining what a new one cost ?

planet tooling (or is it planet DISCS)........... machined a set up for the 2fidddy fronts. found max hard to get hold of so took ages to get em back.....but if he hasnt retired (as he was suggesting) just after he bought his little alpha , does a good job nice bloke and if your in vic he has a courier company that will pick em up and deliver to him ....he'll remove your discs from the ali carrier and use them as a pattern to machine new ones .....if you send them to him pack them well so the carrier doesn't get bent. oh yeh dont leave em there to long cos every time i rang him to try and sort a time to pick up the price went up..
only a little was still good value for the fronts and a rear thrown in..........good luck
not sure if they can machine them without pulling them off the central carrier, which is a good portion of the work anyway...assuming here you got floaters
oh yeah tell him aardy recommended him ..............not sure he's keen on recomendations
get em off drop the front wheel out ...block it so discs dont touch ground unscrew at hub pack carefully...send

Re: Disk Brake Rotor Machining
How deep is the scoring?
The minimum disc thickness is usually stamped around the disc carrier !!
