12r trackday pressures

Post by Shifty »

Hey guys

12R normally gets 38/40psi, although been using 42 as I haven't been riding it a lot on my good behaviour license which means I can get away without checking the tyres ever single time I start it.

Trackday suggestions? I'm a beginner so won't be setting any lap records, but it's a high-speed track so the rear will get a workout out of corners and the front will get hammered under brakes and I reckon they'll be hot as shit :P Suggestions on pressures?

I'm running BT015 one end and a BT016 the other... not sure which is which but they're much the same tyre anyway.

try dropping 6psi both ends
and see how it goes (the first lap will be squishy)

then go up or down a few psi at a time..til you are
comfortable and so is the bike..tracking true
and holding its line in corners

No idea about the 12R or the tyres, but I always start with 30/30 on the 7R and work from there

On the bridgies in summer I would run 34 - 36 cold front & Rear
In winter I drop that to 26 - 28 cold, to get more heat in the tyres ;)

Shifty - these are a good place to start - perhaps even 32F - 34R if its a hot day. As the tyre warms up, you can expect the pressure to rise by as much as 6 psi - this will depend on how hard you are pushing them. On a trackday, its hard not to push ....

But if you start with 34-36 as per Robs advice, you can expect a hot pressure of about 40-42, which is pretty close to what you run normally, so the bike should be just fine.

When I have track days on the MFP12, the cold pressures are set at 32-34. This seems to work well on the old girl, thats using either M3's or 002 Bridgies.

At the end of the day the conditions will make a huge difference, we have raced on days where it will start out 18 Deg C then end up 36 air temp & the track temp will differ by a large amount so ask around & also talk to the ppl there doing the tyre changing services & ask around the garages ;)

I run front 32 rear 33 and it feels good..

beware, I run the front at 30 one day and I could feel the tyre quishing around and flexing badly under heavy braking into turn 2..it felt wierd man.
